Unless you’re lucky enough to have a first class ticket, long gone are the days where drinks were included with your ticket price. You’re not supposed to bring and consume your own alcohol on the flight so what would you do if you only liked to drink cocktails? In comes, The Cocktail Box Co. They put almost everything you need for a well made cocktail in a small metal tin that’s easy for travel.
What’s in the box? Scrappy’s Aromatic Bitters, Scrappy’s Orange Bitters, Scrappy’s Grapefruit Bitters, cane sugar, linen coaster, cocktail picks, recipe card and a spoon that doubles as a muddler. The only additions that you need to request on your flight are bourbon, ice cubes and a small dash of water for your glass. There’s enough to make six old fashioned’s, so one kit will last a few flights for you, a long flight with you and a friend or maybe you can make some new friends by sharing with your seatmates.
If flying isn’t your thing this would also be great on a train, boat cruise or even a camping adventure. It’s perfect for anyone that likes cocktails when they travel and doesn’t want to bring a bunch of heavy bottles. Sourcing ice might be the toughest challenge if you’re out in the woods.
For our photography loving friends a garish is something you might want for your cocktail picks and also to add fresh orange oil. If you’re really into upping your cocktail game try burning the edges of the orange peel to extract a more burnt orange oil flavor. Be careful not to burn your fingers and I definitely wouldn’t suggest bringing out the fire on a flight, only if you’re in a fire safe place.
For an old fashioned that’s a little less boozy, maybe add a little less booze or more than one sugar cube. I think a cube and a half might be a little better but everyone has a different sweet preference.
Should you choose to seek out the Old Fashioned Cocktail Kit by The Cocktail Box Co, expect to pay around $22 for it. I found it overall to be a very compact way to make a cocktail on the go.
