New Releases: Peerless, Rebel 100, New Riff, The Perfect Fifth, Lawrenceburg Bourbon Co, & Blackland Distillery

New American whiskey and bourbon releases this week include an expression from Blackland best enjoyed with a shot of espresso, and an award-winning rye from Lawrenceburg Bourbon Co.

New Riff releases its oldest bourbon yet, and Rebel 100 release a 6 year old. The Perfect Fifth experiments with maturation in both Kentucky and Scotland. And, Peerless releases Batch 1 of its Toasted Bourbon.

New Riff 8 Year Old Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

New Riff Distilling, a premiere Kentucky whiskey distillery, has launched its oldest bourbon to date – an 8-year-old Kentucky Straight Bourbon. This mature expression of the award-winning flagship bourbon is a testament to the brand’s commitment to quality and innovation.

The 8-year-old bourbon is crafted from a mashbill of 65% corn, 30% rye, and 5% malted barley. The spirit is bottled without chill filtration at 50% ABV, preserving its robust character and nuanced flavors. Tasting notes suggest the presence of “copious cherries and red fruits [and] fresh spearmint leaves” on the nose. On the palate, expect “dark berries, cedar plank, [and] savory rye spice”. The finish is balanced “with a sweet cream butteriness”.

As New Riff’s oldest release yet, it signifies a new milestone for the distillery. Priced at $68, the bourbon is available for presale ordering for pickup at the distillery in Newport.

Rebel 100 6 Year Old Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

Lux Row Distillers have announced the release of a 6 year old bourbon, distilled from the wheated recipe used by the distillery since 1849.

Rebel 100 is six years old and was bottled at 50% ABV (or 100 proof). The tasting notes feature “an aroma containing rich scents of vanilla and honey; a palate of dark fruits followed by citrus and oak; and a velvety smooth finish with just a hint of spice”.

The Rebel 100 6 Year Old will be available in the US at an RRP of $59.99 from the end of March. Keep an eye on the Rebel 100 website for more details.

Blackland Texpresso Whiskey

Fort Worth distillery Blackland has unveiled a new and novelty whiskey: the Texpresso Whiskey. A whiskey full of flavors such as coffee, brown sugar, and pecans, the Texpresso can be enjoyed neat or with a shot of espresso for “the ultimate, two-ingredient espresso martini”.

The new release coincides with Blackland Distillery’s fifth anniversary which is coming up on March 23rd.

Blackland is no stranger to the flavored whiskey market and saw huge success with its Texas Pecan Brown Sugar Bourbon. Building on this success, Blackland hopes to wow consumers with this rich bourbon.

Owner and founder Markus Kypreos said: “After witnessing the nationwide popularity of Texas Pecan Brown Sugar Bourbon, we decided it was time to introduce a bold, new flavor profile that combines the smooth kick of whiskey with the familiar, local flavors of coffee, pecans and brown sugar. We anticipate Texpresso will energize palates and become a staple in every whiskey-lovers’ collection”.

The Texpresso Whiskey is currently available at Blackland Distillery’s tasting rooms and on their website for $47.25. The whiskey is expected to hit shelves in the US later this month.

The Perfect Fifth Canongate 14 Year Old American Whiskey

Known mostly for independently bottling scotch whiskies, The Perfect Fifth has turned its attention to whiskey from its homeland of the USA. However, the release has a Scottish twist.

The new whiskey, the Canongate 14 Year Old, was distilled in Kentucky in 2009 and matured in American white oak barrels for three years. Subsequently, the liquid was sent to Scotland to mature for a further 11 years.

The vast climate differences between Kentucky and Scotland have resulted in a complex spirit with tasting notes including “mixed honey tones, multiple layers of vanilla, and hints of cocoa and light spice”.

This 14 year old is the third Canongate release, following an 11 year old and a 24 year old Glentauchers.

Bottled at 64.4% ABV with only 232 bottles available, the Canongate 14 Year Old American Whiskey is available exclusively in the United States at for $175.

Lawrenceburg Bourbon Co. One Cask Rye

Lawrenceburg Bourbon Co. has completed the public release of its award-winning One Cask Rye. The whiskey was recently awarded Gold at the American Craft Spirits Association Awards (ACSA) in Denver.

The whiskey is a single-barrel, high wheat expression that was aged for a minimum of seven years and bottled at cask strength. The mash bill consists of 65% rye and 35% wheat, giving the spirit “[s]pice and caramel, fruity, savory, leather. Well done, complex and big, but still in balance”, according to the ACSA judges.

The whiskey was publicly released on Friday 8th March 2024 at the Lawrenceburg Bourbon Co. Distillery on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Peerless Toasted Bourbon Batch 1

Kentucky Peerless Distilling Company has announced the release of a new Toasted Bourbon.

The whiskey, distilled at the family-run distillery in Louisville, is aged in a level 3 char barrel before being transferred for finishing in a toasted barrel. The result is a whiskey with notes of “ caramel, brown sugar, and toffee” as well as “honey, vanilla, toasted spices, and chocolate” from the toasted barrel.

Peerless Head Taster, John Wadell, said “We hand-select each barrel for the finishing process. We chose to use a medium toast because it contains less tannins, which results in a more aromatic whiskey with warm, sweet, savory character and strong vanilla overtones.”

The Peerless Toasted Bourbon Batch 1 will be available at the distillery, 120 North 10th Street in Louisville, from 10am on March 16th. It will later be released nationwide with the first 100 bottles sold including a numbered label.
