Tasting Notes

About:

The second release in Tobermory’s Hebridean Series, the 24-Year-Old Oloroso Cask Finish expression celebrates the Isle of Mull’s diverse coastline. Originally crafted as the Tobermory 15-Year-Old expression the whisky began its maturation in American oak ex-bourbon casks. It then enjoyed a 9-year finishing period in premium Gonzáles Byass Oloroso sherry casks, before being bottled after 24 years, at 52.5% ABV.
Appearance:
Burnished Copper
Nose:
Lemon citrus aromas greet initially on the nose, giving way to caramelised dates, roasted walnuts and chocolate. There are notes of dark berry fruits, including blackcurrant, red berries, and plums. In the background, a touch of salinity and maritime
Palate:
Spices open on the palate, with warming cinnamon and nutmeg balancing a salty coastal note. There are fruity notes of blackcurrant and plum with a hint of stewed pear, which give way to sweet vanilla and chocolate. These are complemented by notes of toasted oak and pepper
Finish:
Medium-long, with a lingering salted note balanced by toffee sweetness and chocolatey hazelnut praline leaving a smooth rounded finish.
Comments:
A well rounded aged Tobermory whisky, the 24-Year-Old Oloroso Cask Finish expression’s prolonged ex-sherry cask finishing has integrated effectively with the spirit creating a balance between fruits, sweetness, and coastal saltiness. There are enjoyable well-defined notes of dark berry fruits, chocolate, and salt which shift smoothly between layers. I would probably score more closely around 8.5, but let’s be generous and give this easy drinker 9 out 10. This is a gentle well-aged whisky which you could enjoy a few drams of easily. One for Tobermory distillery and well-aged sherry cask whisky fans.
