Tasting Notes

About:

A single grain whiskey from Ireland’s Teeling distillery, first released in 2013. Teeling Single Grain Irish Whiskey is crafted using an unconventional mash bill consisting of 95% corn and 5% malted barley which has been triple distilled. Matured in French oak ex-Cabernet Sauvignon red wine casks from California. Bottled at 46% ABV.
Appearance:
Bright Gold
Nose:
On the nose, aromas of red berries, grapes and plums alongside a hint of cinnamon, nutmeg and clove spice. There’s some underlying vanilla custard sweetness.
Palate:
A spicy opening to the palate with notes of cinnamon, toasted oak, pepper and clove. The spices give way to mixed red berries accompanied by plums and damson before drying oaky tannins surge. There’s quite a buttery creamy mouthfeel.
Finish:
A dry lingering finish led by oak and peppery spice.
Comments:
There’s an enjoyable creamy sweetness, but it’s the red fruits and drying oaky tannin notes which make Teeling Single Grain a distinctive grain whiskey. The influence of the Cabernet Sauvignon red wine casks is clear imparting those dark red fruits, spices and drying tannins which are well integrated with a smooth style grain whiskey. At the price point it’s a light easy drinking grain whiskey for the budget, ideal for anyone looking to explore grain whiskies, or seeking an alternative to Irish malts and blends.
