Tasting Notes

About:

This series spotlights America’s emerging estate distillery movement. As an independent bottler, Lost Lantern has searched for estate distilleries, those who grow and generally distill their own products, for this release. Lost Lantern buys and bottles single barrels and offers them for sale. Some across the country at select retailers, some exclusively online.

Whiskey Acres is estate-grown straight bourbon from Illinois, U.S.A. It is available almost nationwide.
Appearance:
Deep Amber
Nose:
A juicy pop of peppercorns, caramel, rich oak, tart cherry juice cloaked in cinnamon and baking spices.
Palate:
The heat of this whiskey made this a bit of an exploration of flavor. Leather, charcoal, dark grain sugars, soft pipe smoke. I had notes of salt and sourdough bread. Earthy and dry overall with hints of dark roast coffee and bakers chocolate.
Finish:
Hot and vibrant on the tongue, the oak and tobacco take center stage with hints of brown sugar. Longer finish with a dry mouthfeel.
Comments:
This is a whiskey for a hot summer night, the air is a little thick and you want something to match the smell of the earth around you. This is that whiskey. There isn’t a lot of balance and the flavors play well enough together that it doesn’t take away from the sip, but its also not going to offend anyone if you drop a big ice cube in your rocks glass.

I enjoyed this whiskey, the pepper and spices were fun on the tongue. Sometimes doing a few notes well is better than trying to be overly ambitious with a whiskey. The proof is nothing to sneeze at either and it’ll creep up on you if you’re not paying attention. A glass or two and you might be out for the night.

Editor’s Note: This whiskey was either bought as a sample by The Whiskey Wash or provided to us as a review sample by the party behind it. Per our editorial policies, this in no way influenced the outcome of this review.
