Tasting Notes

About:

A 12-year-old single malt from the Highland’s Loch Lomond distillery, the Inchmoan expression is part of Loch Lomond’s peated island collection presenting a smoky representation of the distillery’s house style. Demonstrating the adaptability of the Loch Lomond distillery, Inchmoan combines whisky from traditional swan neck pot stills and Loch Lomond’s distinctive straight neck stills. The Inchmoan expression is matured in three types of American oak casks; bourbon, refill, and recharred. Bottled without chill filtration at 46% ABV.
Appearance:
Bright Copper
Nose:
Aromas of gentle peat smoke, with a slight medicinal element. There are also notes of sweet vanilla, toasted oak, and a hint of mint.
Palate:
On the palate, sweet medicinal peat accompanied by notes of peppery oak and clove giving way to a hint of slightly bitter roasted coffee beans. Warming cinnamon spice alongside some toffee, and stewed apple and pear follow.
Finish:
Medium length finish, with waxy peat and fruity notes of hoppy citrus, gooseberry, apple, and pear. Gentle light smoke and a hint of mint at the close.
Comments:
The Loch Lomond 12-Year-Old Inchmoan expression combines the distillery’s fruity house style with a smoky edge. I enjoyed the fruity notes of stewed apple and pear, and later the appearance of some citrus notes which layer well with the sweet medicinal peat and smoke. It’s been a while since I last sampled Inchmoan, but I still feel I prefer it to Loch Lomond’s standard 12-Year-Old or Inchmurrin expression.

Loch Lomond’s Inchmoan expression isn’t a peat bomb, but offers a gentler smoke and sweet peat experience. At the price point, Inchmoan is a great option for beginning to explore smoky peated whisky, sampling the Loch Lomond range, or simply getting an enjoyable age-statement single malt on a budget.
