Tasting Notes:

About:
The Hearach Decade Edition is a limited-edition lightly peated single malt whisky from the Isle of Harris Distillery, launched to celebrate the distillery’s 10th anniversary. Established in September 2015, the Isle of Harris Distillery produces its namesake gin and launched The Hearach single malt in 2023. Distilled in November 2018, The Hearach Decade Edition is the first distillery release to use peat hand-cut from the Isle of Harris. Matured for 6 years in three first-fill oloroso sherry butts and two first-fill ex-Heaven Hill bourbon barrels. Limited to 2,357 bottles, The Hearach Decade Edition is non-chill filtered and natural colour, bottled at 46% ABV.
Appearance:
Bright Gold
Nose:
Opens with gentle smoke, with a slight maritime aroma. Notes of orange citrus peel and sweet brown sugar. There are floral notes of vanilla, heather, and a touch of lavender.
Palate:
Gentle and smooth on the palate, with a creamy mouthfeel accompanied by a touch of mildly drying gentle smoke. Notes of orange citrus peel and a hint of tangerine, followed by lots of ginger spice reminiscent of ginger cake. There’s a background touch of marshmallow.
Finish:
Lightly drying, with peppery oak before ginger spice returns. Gives way to creamy heather, and a pinch of salt, before fading into gentle smoke.
Comments:
Celebrating 10 years of the Isle of Harris Distillery, The Hearach Decade Edition is the first release to use peat hand-cut from the Isle of Harris. The result is gentle smoke which is well integrated, and balances with a creamy mouthfeel, ginger spice, and floral notes. I particularly enjoyed the combination of ginger spice notes and heathery smoke.

The combined cask influences of first-fill oloroso sherry butts and first-fill ex-Heaven Hill bourbon barrels used for maturation are well balanced for an easy drinking pleasant whisky with lots of gentle depth. Surprisingly complex for 6 years old, The Hearach Decade Edition will appeal to a lot of whisky drinkers, and fans of the Isle of Harris distillery.

The Hearach Decade Edition is available exclusively from the Isle of Harris Distillery online shop, or from the distillery shop.
