About:

A limited-edition release from The Glasgow Distillery, the Glasgow 1770 Cask Strength editions showcase the brand’s signature styles while offering whisky enthusiasts the opportunity to experience the distillery’s raw, unadulterated character, straight from the cask. Released in 2024, the Glasgow 1770 Peated Cask Strength Batch 02 exemplifies the distillery’s signature peated style which uses barley peated to 50 PPM (Phenol Parts per Million). The expression was first matured in virgin oak hogsheads, before a finishing period in Pedro Ximénez ex-sherry casks. Only 1000 bottles were produced bottled without chill filtration and with natural colour, at 60.7% ABV.
Appearance:
Dark Amber
Nose:
Smoky and savoury aromas open, with rich BBQ sauce, tobacco leaf and smoked ham balanced by toffee sweetness, poached plums and dried fruits with a burst of orange zest. There are background notes of oak.
Palate:
Intensely rich and mouthcoating, opening with cured meats and tangy BBQ sauce, shifting to dried dark fruits, apricots and plums, complemented by spices and sweet sherry. The sweet notes fade into soft earthy peat, charred wood and peppery spice.
Finish:
Long and warming, with peat smoke, dried fruits and sherry, accompanied by touches of chocolate and salted toffee with lingering spices.
Comments:
Intense and mouthcoating, the Glasgow 1770 Peated Cask Strength Batch 02 is a rich balance of sweet and savoury, with clear layered notes of BBQ sauce, cured meats, dried fruits, sherry, spices and earthy peat smoke. The Glasgow Distillery doesn’t state the length of the finishing period in the Pedro Ximénez casks, but there’s plenty of sherry cask influence. This cask strength peat sweet combo is a very moreish whisky, even at the 60.7% ABV.

I initially scored the Glasgow 1770 Peated Cask Strength Batch 02 at 9 out of 10, when writing my original review notes. But I received a generous sample for review which my Dad and I revisited eagerly, leading to me having to order us each a bottle to avoid arguments! With that in mind I’ve got to revise my score and give a well-deserved of 10 out of 10. Ideal for fans of cask strength and sweet-peat whisky, with a great price point for a limited-edition bottling.

Editor’s Note: This whiskey was either bought as a sample by The Whiskey Wash or provided to us as a review sample by the party behind it. Per our editorial policies, this in no way influenced the outcome of this review.
