About:

Bomberger’s was the name of the distillery from the 19th century that became Michter’s in the 20th. Annually, they release historical batches honoring that legacy. This year, they changed it up. Bomberger’s Declaration is not well behaved bourbon. It is randy and forthright, and dares you to love it. The 2025 release is called Bomberger’s PFG for Precision Fine Grain. The PFG finishing barrel is a blend of wood from various origins, including Tronçais, Allier, Nevers, and Vosges from France. 40 months of open air seasoning precedes barrel construction.

Appearance:

Cherry stain from wood shop. It is much redder and darker than previous Bomberger’s releases.

Nose:

Rich, and almost overwhelmingly sweet, spanish omelette, hint of pine, sauteed vegetables.

Palate:

First note is sweetness, like Grandpa’s pipe; apple, a touch of lemon, splash of old spice, reminiscent of leather and egg nog.

Finish:

Sweet on the tongue at first, warm and tasty at the height and then fades into heat for a medium slow goodbye.

Comments:

Bomberger’s Declaration is a great bottle of whiskey, and a reach back to an older, ruder, tastier past. The PFG release adds a stupendous color and depth. The richness, force, and flavor makes this a bottle to own, parcel out slowly, and savor.
