Tasting Notes

About:

The flagship release from Angel’s Envy Distillery, located in Louisville, Kentucky. This bourbon is finished in Ruby Port wine casks, bringing out some delicious fruity notes. I was lucky enough to sample this for the first time at the distillery in Louisville, and thought it was time for a revisit. Let’s see how it holds up a year down the line.

Appearance:
Rich amber with a reddish tint.
Nose:
Vanilla comes through straight away. There’s also a light nuttiness, hazelnuts and almonds, that sits nicely beneath the sweetness. I picked up some ripe stone fruits too, maybe plums and apricots, along with a touch of raisin. There’s a faint oakiness in the background.
Palate:
Syrupy and smooth. Vanilla leads again, followed by more of those dried and stewed fruit notes: plums, apricots, raisins. Clove adds a mild spice, and there’s a hint of toasted oak that helps balance the sweetness. A little way in, I started to notice some orange zest coming through.
Finish:
Not especially long, but it’s clean and leaves behind that mix of sweet fruit and orange zest. You do get a gentle nod to the port cask, but it’s integrated rather than overt.
Comments:
Sweet, syrupy, and approachable but with a nice level of complexity, this is a great pour for bourbon beginners and for seasoned drinkers. The port influence is a delicate balance, one that, I think, Angel’s Envy got just right with this bottling. The port is there, but it does not overpower the subtler notes of oak, spice, and citrus that give this whiskey its layers.

Angel’s Envy Port Wine Cask Finish is one of the first bourbons I fell in love with, and I am very glad to have revisited it. Perfect to keep on your bar for a social occasion, or a late-night dram. I’m happy to have it back on my shelf again.
