Introduction: Understanding the Asia World Spirits Competition
Launched in 2019 as the Singapore World Spirits Competition, the event was rebranded as the Asia World Spirits Competition (AWSC) to reflect its broader regional focus. Organised by The Tasting Alliance — the team behind the San Francisco and New York competitions — it brings global standards of blind judging to the dynamic and fast-growing Asian spirits market.
AWSC’s mission is to highlight excellence in both local and international spirits, with a strong emphasis on regional preferences and trends. It offers producers a credible, respected platform to gain visibility and recognition across Asia and beyond.
While the competition evaluates a full spectrum of spirits, its whisky categories — especially Japanese, Indian, and emerging world styles — remain a key draw for producers and judges alike.

The Judging Process
Spirits entered into the AWSC are evaluated through strict blind tasting, with judges assessing each sample without knowing the brand, producer, or price. This ensures impartiality and allows every entry to be judged solely on quality.
Judging panels are made up of industry professionals from across Asia, including bartenders, buyers, spirits writers, and distillers. Their regional expertise ensures that each product is considered within the context of local trends and preferences.
Awards are given at four levels: Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Double Gold — the latter awarded only when all judges on a panel independently score a spirit as Gold. Platinum medals are reserved for those that have achieved Double Gold three years in a row. Top performers may also compete for Best of Class or Best in Show, the competition’s highest honours.
Whisky Coverage and Pinnacle Awards
The AWSC judges a wide spectrum of whisky styles from across the globe, including Scotch, Bourbon, Japanese, Indian, Irish, and emerging world whiskies from Australia and Taiwan. Entries are divided by style, age, and production method, allowing for focused and fair evaluation within each class.
Whiskies may be awarded Bronze, Silver, Gold, or Double Gold, with the latter reserved for entries unanimously rated Gold by all judges on the panel. The Platinum Medal, awarded to whiskies that have earned Double Gold for three consecutive years, recognises exceptional and sustained quality.
The most outstanding examples in each category may go on to win Best of Class, with a select few ultimately competing for Best in Show – Whisky, the competition’s highest accolade in the category.
Industry Influence and Recognition
An AWSC medal is a highly regarded mark of quality, especially within the Asia-Pacific region. For producers, it offers third-party validation, boosts brand credibility, and opens up opportunities for distribution in key Asian markets. Winners often see an uptick in media attention and consumer interest following an award.
For consumers, AWSC medals provide a reliable quality indicator in a competitive and fast-growing marketplace. Whether on retail shelves or bar menus, a Gold or Double Gold award offers assurance that a spirit has been judged to the highest standard.
For the trade, AWSC results help identify rising talent and established excellence across categories. Distributors, importers, and buyers view awards like Platinum and Best in Show as signals of consistency and standout performance, making them valuable in sourcing decisions.
