The World’s Best American Wheat Whiskey According to the World Whiskies Awards 2026

Wheat rarely takes centre stage in American whiskey. It often appears as a supporting grain in wheated bourbon, softening structure and adding roundness. But when wheat becomes the primary grain, the result is a very different style of whiskey. By law, American wheat whisky must contain at least 51% wheat in its mash bill. The profile tends to be gentler than rye, less sweet than high-corn bourbon, and more grain-driven in texture.

At the World Whiskies Awards America 2026, three expressions demonstrated how broad the category has become. Star Hill Farm Wheat Whisky claimed the Category Champion title in the No Age Statement bracket. Thresh & Winnow 12 Years Old 100% Wheat led the 12 Years & Under division. And Heaven Hill’s 19 Years Old Kentucky Straight Wheat Whiskey secured the 13 to 20 Years award.

Let’s take a look at the winners.

Category Champion – Best American Wheat Whiskey (No Age Statement)

Star Hill Farm Wheat Whisky

Tasting Notes: Buttery caramel, golden raisins, gingerbread, honeyed toffee, chocolate covered cherries, apple pie spice, toasted pecans, cinnamon

Find Your Next Bottle: $117

Star Hill Farm Wheat Whisky marks the first-ever American wheat whisky from the Maker’s Mark distillery. Released in 2025, it represents a deliberate move beyond wheated bourbon into a pure wheat-driven identity.

The whisky marries two mash bills: one composed of 70% soft red winter wheat and 30% malted barley, and another made from 100% malted soft red winter wheat. Bottled at 57.35% ABV, it amplifies grain character rather than masking it.

Star Hill Farm is also the first release in the Maker’s Mark portfolio to earn Estate Whiskey Certification through the Estate Whiskey Alliance®. The designation reflects a commitment to regenerative agriculture and local grain sourcing. Here, innovation begins in the soil. The emphasis is not on finishing or extreme age, but on unlocking flavour directly from the grain.

Category Winner – Best American Wheat Whiskey (12 Years & Under)

Thresh & Winnow 12 Years Old 100% Wheat

Tasting Notes: Malted sugar, vanilla milkshake, brown sugar, fresh baked cookies, banana, gingerbread

Find Your Next Bottle: $112

Thresh & Winnow 12 Years Old 100% Wheat is a limited single cask release crafted from USDA organic wheat and aged for 12 years in the Midwest. It is produced by Koval Distillery, founded in Chicago in 2008 by Dr. Robert Birnecker and Dr. Sonat Birnecker Hart.

Koval operates on a grain-to-bottle philosophy and draws on Austrian distilling heritage combined with modern production techniques. A 12-year age statement is rare for 100% wheat whiskey, and the extended maturation gives this release structural depth without sacrificing softness.

As a single cask, it reflects precision rather than scale. Organic grain, extended aging, and limited availability position it firmly in boutique territory.

Category Winner – Best American Wheat Whiskey (13 to 20 Years)

Heaven Hill Heritage Collection 19 Years Old Kentucky Straight Wheat Whiskey

Tasting Notes: Seasoned oak, honey sweetness, clove, nutmeg, cinnamon graham crackers, baking spice, maple syrup, caramel, pepper

Find Your Next Bottle: $699

Heaven Hill’s 19 Years Old Kentucky Straight Wheat Whiskey forms part of the distillery’s Heritage Collection, an annual release showcasing some of its oldest stocks. Bottled at 100 proof and non-chill filtered, the 2025 edition draws from 277 barrels distilled in August and September 2005 and aged in rickhouse Y.

The mash bill consists of 51% wheat, 37% corn, and 12% malted barley. After 19 years and five months in new charred oak, the whiskey demonstrates how wheat can endure extended maturation without becoming overly tannic.

Heaven Hill’s deep inventory allows it to release age-stated expressions at scale, yet this remains a highly limited annual edition. It represents the long view of wheat whisky, patient, structured, and deliberate.

Wheat in the Spotlight

These three winners illustrate the full spectrum of American wheat whisky in 2026. Star Hill Farm centres sustainability and estate-grown grain. Thresh & Winnow highlights organic precision and single cask rarity. Heaven Hill demonstrates the power of long-term maturation.

Wheat may offer a softer grain profile than rye, but in the right hands, it carries just as much depth and ambition.
