The World’s Best American Style Whiskey According to the World Whiskies Awards 2026

“American Style Whiskey” is one of the broadest and most fluid categories at the World Whiskies Awards. It captures expressions that do not sit neatly inside bourbon, rye, or Tennessee whiskey definitions. That can mean blended straight whiskeys, alternative maturation strategies, or styles such as American light whiskey that fall outside bourbon’s strict legal framework.

At the World Whiskies Awards America 2026, the category produced one overall Category Champion alongside additional style-bracket winners. Onyx & Amber’s American Light Whiskey Double Oaked claimed the top honour in the 13 To 20 Years bracket, while Town Branch and 1845 Distilling Company led their respective divisions.

Here is how they earned their titles.

Category Champion – World’s Best American Style Whiskey (13 To 20 Years)

Onyx & Amber Copper Buffalo American Light Whiskey Double Oaked

Tasting Notes: Caramel, nutmeg, cinnamon, vanilla, toasted oak, cocoa, butterscotch, stone fruit, creme brulee, nuts, toffee, dark chocolate, spice

Find Your Next Bottle: $75

Onyx & Amber’s Copper Buffalo American Light Whiskey Double Oaked took the overall title in the American Style Whiskey category, competing in the 13 To 20 Years bracket. Unlike bourbon, American light whiskey is distilled at a higher proof and often aged in used oak, producing a different structural foundation before maturation influence is layered in.

This expression is double oaked, meaning the whiskey undergoes a secondary maturation phase to deepen oak integration and texture. Bottled at a notably high strength of 71.75% ABV, it sits firmly in full-intensity territory.

Onyx & Amber operates as a small-scale producer focused on sourcing and carefully maturing American whiskey stocks in Colorado. Releases are typically limited and one-time in nature. The win signals growing recognition for American light whiskey, a style once overlooked but increasingly embraced for its aging potential and bold character.

Category Winner – Best American Style Whiskey (No Age Statement)

Town Branch Distillery Overproof Four Barrel

Tasting Notes: Caramel, molasses, apricots, cocoa, oak, spice, ginger, clove, cinnamon, honey, brown sugar, marzipan, raisins, herbs, overripe fruit, earthiness

Find Your Next Bottle: $38

Town Branch Overproof 4 Barrel is an American Blended Whiskey composed of four distinct Kentucky straight whiskeys: bourbon, wheated bourbon, double oak, and rye.

The blend draws from multiple mash bills. The straight bourbon component is 72% corn, 15% rye, and 13% malted barley. The wheated bourbon shifts to 70% corn, 22% wheat, and 8% malted barley. The double oak whiskey uses the same 72/15/13 base before finishing in rye barrels with a 90% rye, 5% corn, 5% barley composition. The straight rye component itself is 90% rye, 5% corn, and 5% malted barley.

The whiskeys range from four to eight years old, averaging around five to six years, and are bottled at 52% ABV, or 104 proof.

Rather than leaning on age, Town Branch builds complexity through layered blending and high proof structure. The result is bold, balanced, and deliberately composed.

Category Winner – Best American Style Whiskey (12 Years & Under)

1845 Distilling Company Texian No. 01

Tasting Notes: Official tasting notes were not publicly available at the time of publication.

Find Your Next Bottle: Pricing and broad retail availability are not widely published. Texian No. 01 appears to be an extremely limited release from a small Texas distillery.

Texian No. 01 comes from 1845 Distilling Company in Lowry Crossing, Texas. It is a Texas straight whiskey aged for 49 months in Hungarian oak casks and bottled at 111.5 proof.

Hungarian oak introduces a different wood profile compared to standard American oak, often bringing tighter grain structure and distinctive spice character. Combined with Texas’s warmer maturation climate, the result is an assertive whiskey with pronounced oak influence and elevated intensity.

Unlike Town Branch’s blended structure, Texian No. 01 is driven by regional identity and wood selection. The proof level underscores that boldness. Distribution remains more limited, reinforcing its position as a state-forward expression rather than a nationwide staple.

Where Innovation Thrives

This year’s winners show just how expansive American Style Whiskey has grown. Onyx & Amber’s light whiskey demonstrates the aging potential and intensity the style can achieve when handled carefully. Town Branch proves how layered blending of multiple straight whiskeys can create structure without relying on long age statements. Texian No. 01 reinforces the impact of regional identity and alternative oak selection.

Unlike bourbon or rye, this category does not follow a single template. That freedom is precisely the point. It is where blending, wood choice, proof, and geography can push beyond convention.
