The World’s Best American Rye Whiskey According to the World Whiskies Awards 2026

Rye whiskey has moved from revival curiosity to premium mainstay over the past two decades. By law, American rye must contain at least 51% rye in the mash bill, but beyond that threshold, the category is remarkably diverse. Some producers focus on finishing and sweetness, others pursue high-rye spice and terroir, and a few stretch the style through extended aging.

At the World Whiskies Awards America 2026, three expressions claimed top honours across different age brackets. Elijah Craig Toasted Rye took the Category Champion title in the No Age Statement division. Minden Mill Rye led the 12 Years & Under bracket. And Sazerac 18 Years Old secured the 13 To 20 Years award.

Together, they show how wide the rye spectrum has become.

Category Champion – Best American Rye Whiskey (No Age Statement)

Elijah Craig Toasted Rye

Tasting Notes: Toasted oak, crème brulee, almonds, hazelnuts, creamy, milk chocolate, baking spices

Find Your Next Bottle: $44

Elijah Craig Toasted Rye begins as a fully matured straight rye whiskey before being finished in a second, custom-toasted new oak barrel. The base mash bill sits at 51% rye, 35% corn, and 14% malted barley, the legal minimum rye threshold balanced by a substantial corn component.

Bottled at 94 proof, the finishing step adds a controlled layer of sweet oak and baking spice without overwhelming the rye’s structure. Rather than pushing heavy char, the toasted barrel introduces warmth and texture.

Produced by Heaven Hill, this expression represents a modern approach to rye. It softens the grain’s sharper edges while preserving its identity, making finishing a structural tool rather than a novelty.

Category Winner – Best American Rye Whiskey (12 Years & Under)

Minden Mill Nevada Straight Rye Whiskey

Tasting Notes: Candied fruits and spice, long lingering finish

Find Your Next Bottle: $51

Minden Mill Rye offers a more grain-forward interpretation. Produced in Nevada’s Carson Valley, the whiskey uses an 80% rye, 10% wheat, and 10% barley mash bill. It is non-chill filtered, bottled at 94 proof, and aged four years in a combination of new charred American and French oak.

The high desert climate plays a central role in shaping the spirit. Minden Mill positions its rye as an expression of terroir, with balanced spice and a distinctive candied orange peel note that reflects both grain and maturation environment.

Where Elijah Craig builds complexity through finishing, Minden Mill emphasises origin and grain character. It is a regional rye with a clearly defined voice.

Category Winner – Best American Rye Whiskey (13 To 20 Years)

Sazerac 18 Year Old

Tasting Notes: Rye spice, seasoned oak, herbs, wood, leather, caraway seeds

Find Your Next Bottle: $1,299

Sazerac 18 Years Old stands at the far end of the rye spectrum. Distilled at Buffalo Trace Distillery in spring 2006 and 2007 and released in fall 2025, the whiskey matured for 18 years and five months before bottling at 90 proof.

The mash bill includes Minnesota rye, Kentucky corn, and North Dakota malted barley. The spirit was double distilled, entered into new white oak barrels at 125 proof, and aged in Warehouses O, K, and L on floors two and three. Over its lifetime, roughly 77% of the original liquid was lost to evaporation.

Part of the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection, Sazerac 18 represents long-term maturation at scale. It is refined, oak-integrated, and highly sought after by collectors.

The Full Range of Rye

These three winners illustrate rye’s range in 2026. Elijah Craig shows how finishing can broaden rye’s appeal. Minden Mill highlights regional grain and climate expression. Sazerac 18 demonstrates how patience and warehouse management can transform rye over nearly two decades.

Spice may define rye at its core, but structure, maturation, and technique determine how that spice is expressed.
