Campbeltown is Scotland’s smallest whisky region, but it rarely behaves like one. With just three active distilleries, it continues to punch far above its weight. However, just one of those distilleries stood out at the World Whiskies Awards 2026.
These whiskies were judged blind by industry experts and recognized for balance, execution, and regional character. This article looks at how they are made, why they exist, and what they reveal about modern Campbeltown whisky.

While this series so far has focused on Gold and Category Winners, Campbeltown told a slightly different story, with Glen Scotia taking the only top honor and every other medal in the category.
These are the standout Campbeltown single malt scotch whiskies of 2026, as recognized by the World Whiskies Awards.
Glen Scotia 15 Years Old
Style: 13 To 20 Years
Medal: Gold, Category Winner
Tasting Notes: Citrus peel, ginger snaps, baked fruits, apricots, fruit salad, caramelised sugar, oak, honey
Find Your Next Bottle: $76
Glen Scotia 15 Years Old is widely regarded as a reference point for modern Campbeltown single malt. It sits at the center of the distillery’s core range and emphasizes structure and balance over heavy cask influence.
The whisky is matured in American oak casks for its full 15 years, allowing Glen Scotia’s spirit character to remain at the forefront. The whisky is bottled at 46% ABV.
Founded in 1832, Glen Scotia is one of only three operating distilleries in Campbeltown. Its whiskies are known for a subtle maritime quality and a lightly oily texture. The Category Winner award reflects how clearly this expression communicates regional identity without relying on finishing or embellishment.
Glen Scotia Double Cask Rum Finish
Style: No Age Statement
Medal: Silver
Tasting Notes: Cooked sugar, maritime sea spray, tropical fruits, molasses, coconut, banana, sweet peach
Find Your Next Bottle: $42
Glen Scotia Double Cask Rum Finish shows how the distillery is expanding its core style without losing its Campbeltown identity. It builds on the standard Double Cask by replacing wine influence with a Caribbean rum cask finish.
The whisky is made from malted barley and distilled in Glen Scotia’s traditional pot stills. Maturation begins in American oak ex-bourbon casks. The whisky is then finished in Demerara rum casks, adding a different layer of depth while keeping the spirit’s coastal character intact.
Rum cask finishing is still relatively uncommon in Scotch whisky. Glen Scotia has positioned this release as a nod to Campbeltown’s historic role as a trading port, where rum casks would have passed through the harbor.
Glen Scotia 18 Years Old
Style: 13 To 20 Years
Medal: Silver
Tasting Notes: Salted caramel, sweet honey, floral notes, toffee, pineapple, apricots, sultanas, spice
Find Your Next Bottle: $122
Glen Scotia 18 Years Old sits at the more mature end of the distillery’s core range and shows how time and wood can add depth without overwhelming the spirit. It is positioned as a step up in complexity rather than intensity.
Maturation takes place in American oak casks for most of its life. It then spends a further 12 months finishing in first-fill Oloroso sherry casks. This adds structure and weight while allowing Glen Scotia’s coastal character to remain present.
Glen Scotia has access to quality sherry wood, but uses it with restraint. The Silver medal reflects an approach that favors integration and balance over dominance from cask influence.
Glen Scotia Icons of Campbeltown Release 3
Style: 12 Years & Under
Medal: Silver
Tasting Notes: Forest fruits, candied nuts, red apple, caramel, dried fig, orange peel, praline, cocoa, vanilla, spice
Find Your Next Bottle: $107
Glen Scotia Icons of Campbeltown Release 3 forms part of a limited series designed to link the distillery’s whisky to local history and folklore. Each release in the series focuses on a different story tied to Campbeltown. Release 3 is inspired by the Wulver, a figure found in local legend and carvings around the town.
The whisky is matured for 12 years in American oak casks before being finished in Tawny Port casks. The whisky is bottled at a higher strength than the core range (51.7%) and is non-chill filtered.
The Icons series allows Glen Scotia to work with bolder cask types while keeping production rooted in Campbeltown myth and tradition.
Glen Scotia Double Cask Bordeaux Red Wine Finish
Style: No Age Statement
Medal: Bronze
Tasting Notes: Strawberry, redcurrants, honey, ripe red fruit, oak, maritime salinity
Find Your Next Bottle: $49
Glen Scotia Double Cask Bordeaux Red Wine Finish is one of the distillery’s more experimental releases and sits at the edge of its core range. It reflects Glen Scotia’s recent interest in exploring global wine casks while keeping the spirit style consistent.
Maturation begins in American oak ex-bourbon casks. It is then finished in Bordeaux red wine casks sourced from France. This finishing period adds structure and fruit influence.
Wine cask finishing remains a careful balancing act in Scotch whisky. Glen Scotia has framed this release as an exploration rather than a permanent stylistic shift.
