In the spirits world awards season, the San Francisco World Spirits Competition (SFWSC) is its biggest night. Run by The Tasting Alliance and held every year since 2000, it’s the oldest and largest blind spirits competition anywhere, and a medal remains one of the most sought-after endorsements a distillery can earn.
What gives those medals their weight is the process behind them. Nothing is judged on reputation: every bottle is poured blind and tasted in flights alongside similar styles, with judges seeing no brand, no packaging, and no price.
Entries can take home Bronze, Silver, or Gold, while a unanimous Gold vote from the entire panel elevates a spirit to Double Gold. Rarest of all is Platinum, awarded only to those that claim Double Gold three years in a row.
Quick whisky question
Single malt is everywhere, but what does it mean? We want to know what the word “single” means to you. Three quick questions, under a minute.
The biggest titles are decided in a final sweepstakes round open only to Double Gold winners, where the standout in each category earns Best of Class and one spirit is ultimately named Best in Show.
For Scotch fans, we’ve gathered every award-winning Scotch whisky from the 2026 competition into the table below, according to the results released so far. Keep checking The Whiskey Wash for more coverage of “the Oscars of the spirit world.”
