James Bond doesn’t just chase villains. Sometimes, he catches them over dinner.
In Diamonds Are Forever (1971), starring Sean Connery, Bond exposes a pair of assassins not with a gun, but with a glass of wine. It’s a moment of connoisseurship that reveals just how much his palate matters.
Now, The Macallan has turned that detail into a single malt. Their new Diamonds Are Forever 55th Anniversary Release, as much as it is a tribute to the film, is also a whisky built around his taste for sherry, red wine, and subtle revelation.

READ THE STORYBond As A Connoisseur, Not A Caricature
James Bond is often remembered for his martinis and Aston Martins. But his real power lies in perception.
In both Fleming’s novels and the films, Bond is written as someone who sees what others miss. That includes knowing his wine. In Diamonds Are Forever, he names an 1851 solera sherry on taste alone, then later catches two assassins misidentifying a claret.
Bond’s palate is a tool. It lets him read people, spot fakes, and maintain control in dangerous settings. He doesn’t just drink with style. He drinks with purpose and precision.
The Wine Clue
It happens fast. Bond and Tiffany Case are dining aboard a cruise ship when two familiar waiters arrive—Mr. Wint and Mr. Kidd, posing as staff and ready to kill. One of them pours a 1955 Château Mouton Rothschild.
Bond remarks that he had expected a claret “for such a grand meal.” The waiter claims their cellar is not often stocked with that type of wine. That’s the mistake. Mouton is a claret, and the slip tells Bond everything he needs to know.
He acts immediately, and soon the moment turns deadly.
For most viewers, it’s just another stylish and luxurious scene that we have come to expect from these movies. But for Bond, wine knowledge becomes a weapon. It exposes imposters and ends a threat. That attention to detail—using taste to survive—is now part of The Macallan’s tribute.
How The Macallan Translated the Story Into Whisky
The Macallan built a whisky around the logic of the film in celebration of the 55th anniversary of the release of Diamonds Are Forever.
The Macallan Diamonds Are Forever 55th Anniversary Release is a single malt crafted to reflect Bond’s role as a connoisseur, not just of spirits, but of wine.
According to a brand press release, “the release draws direct inspiration from the Diamonds Are Forever narrative, including Bond’s knowledge of wine.”

Whisky Maker Russell Greig selected bespoke casks seasoned with both sherry and red wine, the latter a first for The Macallan.
The spirit was distilled in 2007—a deliberate nod to “007”—and matured for 18 years in European and American oak. Red wine–seasoned American oak adds a fruit-forward sweetness that contrasts with the familiar richness of sherry wood. Together, they create a layered profile: polished oak, dried fruits, and cocoa-dusted truffles, with a refined, nutmeg-tinged finish.
“Like Bond himself, this whisky holds its secrets,” Greig says. “It may appear dark and mysterious, yet on the palate it surprises with elegance and lightness.”
How This Bond Whisky Breaks from The Macallan’s Earlier Tributes
The Macallan’s last Bond releases—the 60th Anniversary Decades Collection—paid tribute to the franchise’s visual history. Each bottle highlighted a different era with artwork and design pulled from the official archives.

This release takes a different approach. It doesn’t span decades, but focuses on one film, one detail, and builds the whisky around it.
The red wine casks are a direct reference to Bond’s palate in Diamonds Are Forever.
It’s not about celebrating Bond’s image. It’s about understanding how he thinks, and turning that into flavor.
Final Notes
The Macallan’s Diamonds Are Forever 55th Anniversary Release turns a small cinematic detail into a fully formed single malt. It rewards knowledge over flash, just like Bond.
The release is available from February 3 through The Macallan’s website, estate boutique, and Heathrow Airport. It launches at select UK retailers from March 5, priced at £600 RRP.
