For years, whisky enthusiasts like myself have been asking, even begging, Macallan to release a core range expression with some real character. We wanted what we knew they were capable of: an age-stated single malt with a higher proof and natural presentation. With the arrival of the new Macallan 12 Year Old at 110 proof, or 55% ABV, it seems the distillery has finally listened. The question now is a simple one: does it deliver?

Right away, the presentation ticks all the right boxes. This is a 12 year old whisky with no added color, boasting a beautiful, deep hue that immediately stands out against its 43% counterpart. While the packaging does not explicitly state it is non-chill-filtered, the incredible legs on the glass certainly suggest it. They have even updated the bottle with a much sleeker and functional cap. These details matter, and they signal a welcome shift in focus towards the serious whisky drinker.

On the nose, this is distinctively Macallan, but more robust and fruit-forward than we have seen in a long time. It’s fantastic right off the hop, with rich notes of cherry and raspberry compote alongside that classic chocolate orange character. The palate is where it truly shines. For a 55% ABV whisky, there is virtually no heat. Instead, you get a full-bodied experience that evolves with sweet fruit, a hint of strawberry licorice, and an incredible, lingering finish that I could still taste long after my sip.

This is the release that could win back a lot of people to the Macallan camp. It is a powerful reminder of what this distillery can produce when it gets it right. Compared to some recent non-age-stated series that felt thin and overpriced, this 110 proof expression offers genuine substance and value. It is a product that respects both the spirit and the consumer, and in my opinion, it is a massive win.

My initial impression is that this is a fantastic whisky. I am trying not to ride the hype train, but it is difficult to find any flaws. The price is right, the quality is high, and the experience is deeply satisfying. This feels like a significant return to form for a legendary distillery. I believe this is an example of Macallan at its best, but I’m curious to hear your thoughts. Is this the kind of release that will bring you back to the brand?
