After nearly a decade down the whisky rabbit hole, I have accumulated a fair few bottles. Some were fantastic finds, others were regrettable mistakes. But this got me thinking: what if I had to give it all up and start my collection again with just five bottles? Could I build a hoard I would be fully satisfied with, one that covers the vast landscape of Scotch whisky, all on a sensible budget? I set myself the challenge, aiming for a total cost of around £150.
Every great collection needs a reliable all-rounder, a modern gateway whisky that is both high quality and accessible. For this, I look no further than Arran 10. It is a wonderfully balanced and natural single malt, offering classic notes of vanilla, citrus, and a malty character reminiscent of rich tea biscuits. It is a clean, versatile dram that never fails to impress. For times when you want to turn the fruit up to eleven, Compass Box Orchard House is essential. This blended malt is an absolute fruit bomb, bursting with notes of apple sauce, pear, and melon. It is a fantastic and transparent dram that is simply a joy to drink.
A versatile collection must also cater to more intense flavour profiles. For the peated powerhouse, my choice is the iconic Ardbeg 10. This is the purest representation of a meaty, smoky Islay whisky. It is a classic for a reason, delivering an unforgettable experience of campfire smoke, tarmac, and savoury notes like maple bacon. To counter that intensity with rich, festive warmth, I include the TB/BSW from Thompson Bros. This blended Scotch is a sherry banger, packed with the flavours of Christmas cake, sultanas, dark chocolate, and orange. It is a perfect fireside dram that feels far more luxurious than its price tag suggests.
Finally, to prove you know what is what in the world of Scotch, you need a bottle from Campbeltown. My pick is the Campbeltown Loch blended malt. This bottle captures the region’s signature funk perfectly, a unique combination of industrial notes like red diesel mixed with salty sea spray and a surprising amount of fruit. It has a character all its own, adding a complex and intriguing dimension to the collection that will keep you coming back for another taste.
In the end, my five-bottle lineup came to a total of £173. While slightly over my initial budget, it works out to less than £35 per bottle. This collection provides a fantastic journey through the key styles of Scotch, proving that you do not need to spend a fortune to build a truly satisfying whisky shelf. What five bottles would make up your perfect budget collection?
