A common myth is that older whisky must be expensive, but some distilleries defy that convention. Deanston, for example, feels refreshingly honest with its minimal marketing fluff and maximum flavour. Their 18 Year Old single malt is a buttery, honeyed, and complex whisky matured entirely in first fill bourbon casks. Finding an 18 year old of this quality for under £100 is a borderline miracle these days, and it proves that age and value can go hand in hand if you know where to look.
If I had to recommend one bottle that represents the absolute pinnacle of value right now, it would be the Ledaig Sinclair Series Rioja Cask Finish. This is a peated party piece from the Tobermory Distillery. Bottled at a respectable 46.3% ABV, it delivers an amazing amount of coastal peat smoke and fruity complexity from its wine cask finish. With a standard price around £34, it is already a phenomenal deal, but it can often be found on supermarket offers for even less. It is a true balanced banger.
