4 Whiskies That Challenge The Macallan 12 Year Old According To Whisky Experts

The Macallan 12 Year Old Sherry Oak is, without a doubt, a fantastic whisky and a benchmark for its style. But with a price tag now pushing £70 a bottle, it is fair to ask if its legendary status still justifies the cost. This question prompted me to seek out alternatives that deliver a comparable sherry matured experience for less money. Phil Dwyer and I consulted with industry experts to get their picks, and the results highlight just how much quality and value is available if you look beyond the biggest name.

The first recommendation, and perhaps the most universally acclaimed, is the GlenAllachie 12 Year Old. Since being taken over by the legendary Billy Walker in 2017, this distillery has been transformed into a behemoth of flavour. Walker’s expertise in cask management, re-racking spirit into a variety of sherry and virgin oak casks, has created a whisky that is consistently brilliant. At around £47, it delivers a rich, complex, and award winning experience that directly competes with the Macallan for a fraction of the price. For many, it has become the new standard for an affordable sherried dram.

Digging deeper reveals some underrated gems that offer even more complexity. The Glen Garioch 12 Year Old, for instance, is a more three-dimensional whisky. It moves between sweet, spicy, and even savoury notes, offering a journey in the glass. Crucially, it is bottled at a higher strength of 48%, giving you more whisky for your money at just under £50. For those willing to spend a little more than the Macallan 12, the Speyburn 18 Year Old presents an incredible value proposition. At roughly £85, you get six additional years of maturation for only a £15 premium. When you consider the official Macallan 18 Year Old costs upwards of £350, the value here is phenomenal.

We cannot, however, ignore the Macallan 12’s foundational role. It was one of the first widely available aged single malts and helped build the category we love today. If you take the price aside, it remains a beautifully crafted whisky. The issue is purely one of context. When a 12 year old costs the same as an 18 year old from another excellent distillery, you start to judge it with a different lens. While Macallan laid the groundwork, today’s whisky enthusiast is spoiled for choice with distilleries offering exceptional quality at more accessible prices.

So the choice is yours. Is the legacy of a brand name worth the premium, or does better value win the day?
