This year, we’re raising our glasses to a milestone close to our hearts: 25 years of welcoming visitors to Dewar’s Aberfeldy Distillery. Since the day we opened our doors back in April 2000, our home in the heart of the Scottish Highlands has been more than just a place where whisky is crafted; it’s been a place where whisky lovers from around the world meet our welcoming team, connect with our heritage, our craft, and, most importantly, each other.

So, let’s take a moment to linger over the best part of any dram: the story behind it.

Where It All Began

April 17th, 2000 — the day the stills were polished, the film reels were ready, and a limited edition 25-year-old single malt was uncorked for an audience of over 100 whisky industry VIPs, and Dewar’s World of Whisky, as it was called then, was officially open. That first opening party set the tone for what Dewar’s Aberfeldy Distillery would become: a celebration of craft and community in the very heart of Scotland.

In those early days, our visitors arrived to find a warm reception, an innovative nosing and tasting room, a plush cinema screening our brand story across three screens, and an interactive archival museum that brought the Dewar family’s storied whisky legacy to life. From there, they were whisked into the distillery itself, offering a behind-the-scenes look at where our liquid gold is produced.

Some of our staff have been with us since that opening day. We asked Dorothy Baird, Senior Guide and Catering Officer at Dewar’s Aberfeldy since 2000 to recount some of her memories from that opening day:

“When the distillery first opened 25 years ago, I was a part-time assistant. I just thought it was lovely. The team was brilliant, I loved the setup, the centre was beautiful. My dad had told me about this visitor centre, so that had interested me in the job. He had worked in the distillery about 23 years at that point, so he was making the whisky.

“In the early days, visitors came in, they used the shop, if they were doing the tour they would do the museum, they’d have a wee taste of Dewar’s White Label or a coffee and we’d take them out on the tour around the distillery. Since then, we’ve evolved a great deal. Today, we offer a wide range of experiences, from blending masterclasses to our old and rare Drams of Your Dreams tastings, there’s definitely something for every whisky lover now.”

Piping In the Crowds

It didn’t take long for word to spread. By 2002, we’d formed a spirited partnership with Scotland’s beloved Edinburgh Military Tattoo, the country’s top tourist attraction at the time. For five years, the sound of pipes and drums rolled down the Aberfeldy valley as we hosted our very own mini-Tattoos right outside the distillery, as well as workshops for piping, drumming and dancing. It was Scotland at its best: music, pageantry, whisky and visitors from across the globe soaking up the magic under the Highland sky.

By 2004, just four years after opening, we toasted our 100,000th guest from around the world. As the years ticked by, we stayed true to our roots but never stopped asking: How can we make this experience even better?

Growing With Our Guests

A turning point came in 2012, when we breathed new life into our old filling store and warehouse. This wasn’t just an upgrade; it was an expansion of the story we could tell. Visitors could now explore the crucial final steps of our craft: blending and maturation. And for those wanting to take a piece of the experience home, we introduced our much-loved ‘fill your own bottle’ station.

By 2014, it was time for a bigger transformation. The café and shop were reimagined from the ground up. Out came the builders and in came Whisky Lounge and bar, along with the Tunnel of Staves, a beautiful passageway of oak that still guides guests from our museum to the café.

Over this time, we started to partner with local businesses; we have proudly served soup, scones, and cakes made by Aberfeldy local Steven Dow since our early days. Today, most of our cafe food is supplied by local businesses, including one run by two ex-tour guides who got married while working with us. In our shop, we feature products made at The Workshop – a local social enterprise that creates a bridge between education and employment for young people in Highland Perthshire.

The new spaces are a place for guests to relax and enjoy some food. With a large public bar where our team can share stories about our whisky over drams, flights or cocktails. With these renovations came a new name celebrating our history and location – Dewar’s Aberfeldy Distillery.

Embracing Change

In 2016, we took another step forward: swapping out the traditional audio guides for an interactive app. Now, visitors could wander at their own pace, scanning points on the walls to unlock hidden layers of our story, text, photos, videos, all in the palm of their hand. We also tucked away a little secret: behind the original filling store, we carved out the ‘Secret Bar’. This cosy hideaway quickly became a favourite for private tastings and intimate gatherings.

Honouring Heritage, One Dram at a Time

Alongside the steady hum of daily tours and tastings, special moments kept rolling in. In 2021, Dewar’s celebrated its 175th anniversary with a limited edition blend sold exclusively here at the distillery; a bottle that captured nearly two centuries of dedication in a single pour.

When Aberfeldy Single Malt turned 125 in 2023, we marked the occasion the only way we know how: by sharing it. We unveiled a new heritage exhibition in our museum and released a remarkable 25-year-old single malt, an echo of the very first bottle we opened on day one back in 2000.

In 2024, we renovated our original warehouse buildings into our new immersive experience, where visitors can explore the rich heritage of Aberfeldy Single Malt and the unique double ageing process behind Dewar’s Blended Scotch. The tour takes you behind the scenes of whisky making, features an interactive projection of our Master Blender Stephanie Macleod, and ends with a personalised tasting based on your flavour profile.

Onto The Next 25 Years…

Over the last 25 years, the bricks and mortar of Dewar’s Aberfeldy Distillery have changed, but the heart of it never has. It’s in the stories we tell, the warmth of our welcome, the passion in every dram poured, and most of all, the visitors who’ve made this place part of their own story, too.

Whether you came for a quick tasting, a quiet moment in the café, or stayed for a long afternoon discovering the secrets of our warehouses; you are the reason this home keeps evolving.
