From Highland Warrior to Lowland Distiller: Sam Heughan, the actor famed for playing Jamie Fraser in the global hit Outlander, has taken on an exciting new role. Earlier in 2025, Heughan and his friend, Alex Norouzi, announced the founding of Galloway Distillery. For Heughan, this is the realization of a personal ambition: owning a distillery among the familiar glens of the Galloway region where he spent his childhood.
This is not Heughan’s first foray into the world of spirits. In 2020, he co-founded The Sassenach Spirits, which has already won awards for its gin and blended scotch whisky.
The opening of the Galloway Distillery marks the pivotal next step in Heughan’s spirits journey, giving him a dedicated place to shape his liquids at the source and bringing production directly to the region where he grew up.

Sam Heughan was born in Balmaclellan in Dumfries and Galloway. He spent his early childhood in the region, and has talked often about growing up among forests, castles, and wide open countryside. For him, Galloway is not a backdrop. It is part of his identity.
This personal connection explains his choice of region. As he told The Scotsman, during the opening: “We wanted to create a distillery in Galloway. It is basically a homecoming for me. I was born and raised here and I feel very, very thankful to come from such an amazing place.”

He also described the significance of the region’s landscapes on the Galloway Distillery website, recalling how he once climbed the ruins of Kenmure Castle as a child and “imagined” himself as a character from Scottish history. That sense of place continues to play a role in his storytelling career and in his spirits work.
The distillery stands outside Newton Stewart, close to Bladnoch, one of Scotland’s oldest Lowland sites. Notably, the acquired site was formerly operated by Crafty Distillery, which was already making gin and laying down whisky casks before the acquisition.
Heughan’s purchase builds directly on that foundation. It brings new investment and wider attention to a region that receives far fewer visitors than the Highlands or Speyside. Tourism officials have highlighted the potential economic impact of the project, which has already drawn interest from Outlander fans and whisky drinkers from around the world.
From Actor to Entrepreneur: The Rise of The Sassenach
Sam Heughan entered the spirits world long before he bought a distillery. He founded The Sassenach through his company, the Great Glen Company, in 2020. His first release was The Sassenach Blended Scotch Whisky. It became a fast success. In fact, it was awarded a Double Gold Medal at the 2025 New York World Spirits Competition.
Later, Heughan partnered with El Tequileno in Mexico to create The Sassenach Select, a limited edition reposado tequila. He later introduced The Sassenach Wild Scottish Gin, which was made at Crafty Distillery before he acquired the site. The gin went on to win a Gold Medal at the 2023 Los Angeles International Spirits Competition.
These releases helped establish The Sassenach as a serious spirits brand. They also showed that Heughan worked closely with experienced distillers. Each partnership brought a different style and production method into the range.
With the launch of the Galloway Distillery, the brand has a physical home for the first time. It brings production, blending, and visitor experiences into one place. The first new release from the distillery ownership is The Sassenach Finest Scottish Vodka, which showcases Scottish wheat and local fruit and debuted earlier this month.
The move marks a new stage in Heughan’s spirits journey. The Sassenach now has a site that supports future growth and gives visitors a way to see how the range continues to develop.
Inside the Galloway Distillery
As mentioned above, the site that is now the Galloway Distillery began with a different identity. Crafty Distillery opened in 2017 and quickly became known for Hills and Harbour Gin. The gin won national awards and helped establish the small Lowland facility as a serious craft producer. The distillery also produced 24Seven Vodka and a range of ready-to-serve cocktails.
The Sassenach Wild Scottish Gin was produced at Crafty Distillery before Sam Heughan bought the site. This placed Crafty in a unique position within the development of The Sassenach portfolio. The facility already had experience working with the brand through contract distillation.
Following the purchase, the site was renamed Galloway Distillery. It is now the production home for The Sassenach spirits range.
What Comes Next For Galloway Distillery?
The next phase of development is significant. Planning approval has been granted for a large-scale expansion that will create a net-zero production site. The new layout will run on green energy and will have the capacity to produce up to 200,000 liters of pure alcohol per year. The project also includes new tasting rooms and an expanded visitor center with views of the Galloway Hills.
As part of the distillery’s role as The Sassenach’s brand home, the new Sassenach Fine Scottish Vodka is now being produced here, alongside continued production of Hills and Harbour Gin. Visitors can see the stills in use during guided tours and can taste the spirits in the on-site bar.
Looking ahead, Galloway Distillery is also expected to produce a Galloway single malt Scotch whisky alongside the Sassenach range.

Celebrity-owned spirits have become a major force in the drinks world. George Clooney helped set the tone when Casamigos Tequila grew into one of the fastest-rising brands in the United States. Sam Heughan fits into this global trend, but his approach stands out for one clear reason. He now owns the distillery that produces his spirits. Trade coverage confirms that The Sassenach gin was already made at the site before the acquisition, and the distillery is now the home for the full range.
Many celebrity spirits operate through licensed production or contract partnerships. Heughan’s involvement includes direct ownership of a working distillery in the region where he was born.
