Tasting Notes

About:

This Ardbeg 17 Year Old was bottled in the 1980s, going by the 75cl volume which was standard in the UK at the time. As such, we can assume that the whisky was distilled some time in the 1960s or early 70s when Ardbeg was owned by DCL and Hiram Walker & Sons. For transparency, I am pouring this out from a miniature with surprisingly good fill level. So, how will this Ardbeg hold up after many decades in the bottle?
Appearance:
Gold
Nose:
Bonfire embers on a seaside campfire, warming. Not like a modern Ardbeg. Sweet, oaky, not overly smoky. Lemongrass.
Palate:
Well, that is something. Touch of sweetness, honey, and saline tannic smoke on the back end.
Finish:
Back to that campfire again. Not as earthy as modern Ardbeg. The finish lingers and tempts me back for more.
Comments:
An amazing example of old Ardbeg and the nuanced flavors that have, seemingly, always been present in its whisky. This was delicious. I just wish I had a full bottle.
