Last week, William Grant & Sons announced the introduction of the third batch of Tun 1509, the popular single malt line from The Balvenie. Tun 1509 was first introduced in 2014 as a replacement to the retired Tun 1401 line, and a second batch was released in 2015.

READ THE STORYAll casks for the third release of Tun 1509 were chosen and blended by David Stewart, the Balvenie’s Malt Master. The bottling consists of 31 different casks, all distilled between 1989 and 1993. The selection included refill and first-fill American oak hogsheads as well as sherry butts, all of which is outlined on the packaging canister.
It’s a delightful antidote to the recent NAS trend. Instead of a mystery, you’re presented with a ton of information about the barrels that go into this release: date distilled, type of cask, individual flavor profiles, and marrying procedure.

Stewart has this to say about the new Tun 1509 release:
“We have been overwhelmed by the positive reception and recognition that Batches 1 and 2 of Tun 1509 have received from the industry. We hope this limited release of Batch 3 will be received in a similar fashion as it possesses those familiar Balvenie characteristics that made previous batches so popular.”
Utilising my knowledge of our whisky stocks and the process of marrying the different cask together, we have created a whisky of rich complexity with elegant oaky notes and dried fruits balanced by mellow cinnamon spices and ginger. It also has lovely layers of vanilla oak, rich woody spices, dark fruits and a definite sherry character interspersed with elegant honey.”
The release will be limited to just 8,850 bottles, with retail pricing set for 260£. Expect them to become available in July.
