The Balvenie Tun 1509, Batch 4, according to those behind it, follows on the heels of Batch 2 and Batch 3, both of which we reviewed mostly favorably earlier this year. As for Batch 4, it was pulled together by Malt Master David Stewart from 23 traditional whisky casks and sherry butts before being left to marry in the tun for several months.

“Stock management is a unique and enjoyable part of my job as Malt Master and Tun 1509 Batch 4 is a perfect example of how marrying together various individual casks can create an expression of real quality,” said Stewart in a prepared statement. “Using both traditional casks and Sherry butts, we’ve been able to craft a complex and rich expression of The Balvenie – combining malty sweet vanilla and honeycomb on the nose, followed by concentrated honey, rich dried fruits and cinnamon and ginger spiciness. I’ve been delighted by the response of the whisky community to previous batches and I’m sure Batch 4 will be as highly regarded.”
Plans call for this non-chill filtered, 51.7% ABV expression to be available starting this month for around $400. You’ll find some official tasting notes below for your consideration from The Balvenie.

- Nose: Rich and malty, sweet toffee vanilla fudge. Layers of honeycomb and citrus notes ending in some mild oak spices.
- Taste: Very syrupy with luscious malty notes and concentrated honey. The initial sweetness gradually develops into deeper richer oak with some dried fruits and a cinnamon and ginger spiciness.
- Finish: Luxurious and honeyed with delicate spices and oak.
