Macallan partnered with Lalique, a well known maker of fine crystal items, in this creation of a whisky said to price at $25,000 per bottling. It is a 62-year-old expression that was “originally filled in American oak sherry seasoned casks in November 1950,” according to the distillery. It is the second oldest Scotch ever released by them.
The decanters this ancient spirit rests in, of which there are only 400 worldwide, is crafted of high quality crystal. Three sides of each container have a frosted texture, representing what’s described as “the sandstone walls of The Macallan manor.” The initials of Captain John Grant (JEG), who oversaw the building of the manor, “are also a key feature of the decanter, as it is carved on the manor’s datestone. The manor’s crow-stepped gable leading towards the chimney is represented by the crow-stepped bottle neck.”

Tasting notes for this release from the distillery indicate this cherry colored whisky to have “a rich aroma encompassing flavours of toffee, raisin and blood orange and hints of spices like cinammon and ginger, chocolate and vanilla. The Macallan 62 year old also has a rich raste, comprising of dried fruits and citrus and a long woody finish.”
The Macallan Limited Edition Lalique V, the Spiritual Home Decanter, as the name implies, is part of a collection that includes other bottlings ranging in age from 50 to 60 years old.
