Tasting Notes

About:

Celebrating the 200th Anniversary of the Midleton distillery, this Very Rare 28-Year-Old Single Pot Still Irish whiskey honours the Murphy family’s founding of the Old Midleton Distillery in County Cork, Ireland in 1825. Master distiller Kevin O’Gorman selected five casks to craft the Midleton Very Rare 200th Anniversary release. The casks included first and second-fill American oak casks, and a Japanese Mizunara oak puncheon filled for more than six years with a bespoke batch of whiskey previously matured in American oak. Only 636 bottles were released, bottled at 54.7% ABV.
Appearance:
Bright Gold
Nose:
A bright and fresh nose, opening with aromas of tropical pineapple, kiwi, peach and lemon zest, giving way to sweet buttery pastry, vanilla and honey. There are fragrant notes of exotic sandalwood, wood polish, leather and cinnamon, with a touch of fresh herbs.
Palate:
Smooth and gentle on the palate, the experience opens with tropical and stone fruits including pineapple, peaches, apricots and lemon citrus, accompanied by a hint of caramelised pear. Sweet notes of vanilla, honey and crème caramel are balanced by light oak, sandalwood and cinnamon.
Finish:
Medium-long, with lingering notes of oak and cinnamon spice, accompanied by a hint of ginger.
Comments:
The Midleton Very Rare 200th Anniversary Edition is a very smooth and light single pot still whiskey, balancing notes of wood, sweetness, and fruits for a refined and layered experience of a well-aged Irish whiskey. The influence of the Japanese Mizunara oak imparts vibrant and fragrant notes of sandalwood and soft oak which enhance the tropical and stone fruits, while also complementing the sweeter vanilla notes characteristic of American oak casks. A distinctive 200th anniversary release, with Midleton’s inaugural use of Japanese Mizunara simultaneously demonstrating the distillery’s continuing innovation.
