Woodford Reserve, the distillery that has been producing bourbon in Woodford County, Kentucky since 1995, recently announced the arrival of the latest version of their limited-edition, high-proof release Woodford Reserve Batch Proof.

Packaged in a new bottle design compared to previous years, this 128.3 proof expression is part of Woodford Reserve’s Master’s Collection series, which pays tribute to master distiller Chris Morris and assistant master distiller Elizabeth McCall.

“Most people do not get to experience Woodford Reserve at such a high proof presentation, so we are honored to share this special bourbon with the public,” Morris said in a prepared statement. “The depth of flavor found in Woodford Reserve Batch Proof is truly remarkable.”

Using the same grain bill and process as their Woodford Reserve Kentucky Straight Bourbon, the distillers bottled their Batch Proof straight from the barrel, in its purest form and not at the usual 90.4 proof for their releases. Official tasting notes are below.

Woodford Reserve has been busy in this early part of the year, with the recent announcements of the re-release of their Double Double Oaked Bourbon expression and Valentine’s Day partnership with chocolatier Phillip Ashley Chocolates. The distillers also recently released their annual Kentucky Derby bottle, featuring artwork from Richard Sullivan. Woodford Reserve is a presenting sponsor of the annual horse race.

  • Nose: A complex medley of rich tea leaf, oak and dried leather notes are underpinned by delicate hints of peppermint and fresh cedar.
  • Taste: Dry tea notes are balanced by slightly sweeter dark caramel and cocoa notes. Traces of peppermint brighten a potpourri of dried berries.
  • Finish: A long subtle dryness is highlighted by a lingering dark chocolate espresso fade.
