Nelson’s Green Brier Distillery out of Tennessee has been on point of late it seems like with one release after another of cask finished, sourced bourbons. The first in its Special Cask Finish Series spent extra aging time in ex-Oloroso sherry casks, and more recently the second variant did its final days before bottling in ex-Cognac casks. Now we see the Belle Meade bourbon line up moving into another fortified wine cask, this time taking the shape of former Madeira barrels.Belle Meade Bourbon Madeira Cask Finished, according to the distillery, takes their typical six to nine year old blended bourbon mix and lets it rest further for an undisclosed amount of time in selected casks which were used in the production of Malmsey Madeira. Malmsey is the richest and sweetest tasting of the Madeira styles, and this is noted as having a pretty significant play on the final tasting notes for this whiskey.
Bottled at 90.4 proof and non-chill filtered, expect this bourbon to already be making its way to retailers around now. Word is it is pricing around $75 a bottle. You’ll find official tasting notes for this high rye whiskey below from the distillery.
- Nose: Floral, with vanilla and hints of toffee.
- Palate: Dark Wildflower honey, vanilla, ripe persimmon, dried black cherry, caramelized sugar and baking spices and a soft, velvety mouth feel.
- Finish: Lengthy finish mimicking the palate with a touch of malt and chocolate.
