Ragtime Rye Whiskey

The ever developing craft whiskey scene of New YorkRagtime Rye, according to the distillery, is a straight rye whiskey aged a minimum of three years in full size American oak barrels with a #3 char. Its mash bill is said to be “72% rye, 16% corn and 12% malted barley with the primary grains, rye and corn, being derived from New York State. The rye, which is 100% non-GMO and primarily organic, is specifically grown for New York Distilling Company by Pedersen Family Farms in the Central Finger Lakes region of upstate New York.”

New York Distilling bottled this spirit at 90.4 proof, and they intend for the whiskey to be consumed either on its own or as part of a cocktail. It will price for $44 a bottle and limited tasting notes released by the distillery indicate that “nuances of caramel, earthy tobacco and spices including clove interplay on the palate with hints of white pepper and bright fruit.”

“We are excited to finally be able to share, after three and half years, the efforts of our work and commitment to our straight American rye whiskey,” said Allen Katz, New York Distillery Company’s co-founder, in a statement.

The spirit, by the way, gets its name from Ragtime music, which ran in parallel in popularity and later decline with the rye whiskey industry.
