About:

A Canadian single malt from Vancouver Island based distillery Macaloney’s, the Cath-Nah-Aven expression pays homage to the great sherried whiskies produced on the banks of Scotland’s River Spey. Distilled from locally grown British Columbia malted barley, the whisky is matured in Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez ex-sherry casks sourced from Andalucía, Spain. Botted at 46% ABV, non-chill filtered and at natural colour.
Appearance:
Bright Chestnut
Nose:
Aromatic red fruits including berries, plums and apples leading into fruitcake notes. There are touches of leather and sea breeze.
Palate:
The palate opens with rich and slightly spicy sherry, with a creamy mouthfeel. There are lots of sherried fruits, balanced by notes of leather, malt, and oak.
Finish:
Long and lingering, sherry and dried fruits echo with oak, malt and a hint of sea salt.
Comments:
Macaloney’s Cath-Nah-Aven expression is a clear tribute to Scotland’s Speyside region whiskies; on a blind tasting I’m not sure many drinkers would tell the difference. Cath-Nah-Aven is a rich sherry bomb with lots of red and dried fruit notes, but I particularly like how these are balanced by touches of malt, oak, and sea salt. A great introduction to the Macloney’s distillery and Canadian whisky.
