Tasting Notes

About:

This Laphroaig 12-Year-Old Madeira Single Cask is an official distillery single cask bottling, created exclusively for UK retailer The Whisky Shop. Distilled in 2013, this single malt was fully matured in Madeira hogshead cask #1328 for 12 years, before bottling in 2015. Only 318 bottles were produced, bottled at natural cask strength of 51.6% ABV.
Appearance:
Bright Golden Honey
Nose:
Aromas of medicinal peat accompanied by ashy bonfire smoke open, slowly easing into notes of dried figs and sultanas alongside stewed red berries and plums. Aromas of tobacco leaf linger in the background.
Palate:
An oily but rich opening on the palate, with medicinal peat, iodine, and bonfire smoke leading. The smoke gives way to warmth as the Madeira cask sweetness emerges with notes of honey, figs, red berries and baked apple developing a slightly creamy mouthfeel. There’s also a touch of clove and cinnamon spice.
Finish:
A long finish, with lingering gentle peat accompanied by a slightly salty maritime note and touch of oak.
Comments:
This Laphroaig 2013 12-Year-Old Madeira Single Cask is an exclusive release from UK retailer The Whisky Shop, and is available in stores retailing at £199.

I first sampled the Laphroaig 12-Year-Old Madeira Cask at a Whisky Shop tasting event and was curious to discover how Laphroaig’s spirit interacted with the Madeira cask. The characteristic Laphroaig notes are present with the medicinal peat, smoke, and a slightly oily texture but these shift seamlessly into the warming sweetness of the Madeira cask influence. This adds an interesting dimension to Laphroaig’s spirit with warming honey and red berry notes emerging. A unique and distinctive Laphroaig experience.
