Tasting Notes

About:

A 21-Year-Old Islay single malt, and the oldest expression in Bowmore’s Sherry Oak Series, and the recent winner of World’s Best Single Malt at the World Whiskies Awards 2026. The Bowmore Sherry Oak Cask Collection marries the distillery’s distinctive house style with maturation and finishing in hand selected Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez sherry casks. The Bowmore 21-Year-Old Sherry Oak expression is matured in a mix of Oloroso sherry and ex-bourbon casks, then finished in first-fill Pedro Ximénez casks. Bottled at 46.8% ABV.
Appearance:
Dark Bronze, with a tint of red.
Nose:
Gentle aromas open with light iodine and medicinal peat, giving way to tobacco, leather and wax polish. There’s also a note of toffee sweetness.
Palate:
Sweet notes open on the palate, led by toffee and vanilla accompanied by a touch of treacle. The sweetness is followed by mouthcoating spicy sherry alongside notes of nutmeg and cinnamon, giving way to a sharp touch of stewed rhubarb. A whisper of smoke echoes in the background.
Finish:
A medium length spicy finish, with lingering notes of sherry, clove, nutmeg and oak accompanied by subtle dry tobacco smoke.
Comments:
The Bowmore 21-Year-Old Sherry Cask is easily the standout expression in the Sherry Cask range for me, the sherry cask influence was clear, rich and mouthcoating balanced by well-integrated and layered notes of sweetness and spice – and I did enjoy the note of stewed rhubarb. The peat and smoke seemed better balanced with the whisky than the range’s younger expressions, although this still seemed very restrained when compared with similar aged Islay malts.
