Tasting Notes

About:

A Glen Elgin single cask bottling from independent bottler Claxton’s, released under the Warehouse No.8 premium range which focuses on expressions from octaves and smaller cask types. This expression from Speyside’s Glen Elgin was matured in an oloroso sherry octave, which yielded only 74 bottles. Distilled in 2007, this Glen Elgin was bottled at 13 years old, at 55.4% ABV.
Appearance:
Rich Amber
Nose:
Aromas of dry wood, accompanied by notes of polished mahogany or teak. Sherried fruits follow including raisins and dates, balanced against all spice, cinnamon, and dark chocolate. There’s a faint whisper of smoke, and an underlying hint of fizzy cola sweets.
Palate:
Fizzy cola sweets open on the palate, quickly giving way to rich and mouthcoating yet slightly drying oloroso sherry, accompanied by raisins, dates and stewed orchard fruits including apples and plums. Balanced against peppery oak, cinnamon, and furniture polish, before giving way to dark chocolate with a slight savoury heat like chocolate infused with chilli and ginger.
Finish:
Medium-long, rich but slightly drying sherry lingers alongside spicy oak.
Comments:
This Glen Elgin 2007 vintage feels like a throwback to a more traditional sherry cask matured whisky, there’s none of the slight artificial sweetness you can find with some modern sherry matured whiskies. A well-balanced sherry cask matured whisky, there’s plenty of rich oloroso and stewed fruits, integrated against savoury oak, spices, and slightly bitter chocolate.
A great single cask sherry octave matured whisky from Claxton’s – the rich sherry makes this an easy drinking dram concealing the 55.4% ABV.
