Tasting Notes

About:

Dogfish Head is traditionally known as a brewery, but they started to experiment with spirits a few years back, and decided to throw a curveball with their first 4 year old American Single malt finishing it in Brazilian Amburana oak.
Appearance:
Cut Hay
Nose:
Chocolate Chip Banana Bread
Palate:
Faint ginger on the very front palate which opens up into baking spice, not cinnamon, but more of a nutmeg that evolves into wood spice.
Finish:
Long lingering cinnamon finish
Comments:
Dogfish Head is best known for its beers. It is a bold move for them to release their first 4-year-old whiskey as an Amburana finished single malt, but it paid off! Unlike the typical overpowering cinnamon flavor that Amburana oak imparts the malted barley created space to form a more subtle banana flavor. The cinnamon only really rears its head on the finish. Something worth seeking out for a twist on both single malt and Amburana.
