Whisky Review: Aberfeldy 28 Year Old Limited Release

Tasting Notes:

About:
A well-aged expression from the Highlands, this Aberfeldy 28 Year Old was a limited-edition bottling first released in 2015. Much of the Aberfeldy distillery’s output is destined for Dewar’s blended scotch, although the release of an Aberfeldy 12 Year Old in 1999 heralded the creation of a single malt range.
Appearance:
Golden Honey
Nose:
A sweet nose of honey, chocolate, orange, and sherried raisins, alongside notes of barley and malted biscuit.
Palate:
Creamy on the palate, initially orange, ginger, toffee, and chocolate. Hold on the tongue for 28 seconds and the chocolate flavors become increasingly sweet, before a hit of slightly drying cinnamon.
Finish:
A long, slightly warming finish. Orange and honey sweetness linger, with a hint of vanilla and chocolate. Before a slightly drying biscuity final note.
Comments:
Despite the commercial 40% strength, this Aberfeldy 28 Year Old is a rich, flavourful and expressive dram. A great example of a well-aged sherried whisky – dangerously drinkable!

This Aberfeldy 28 Year Old is a high-age statement release from the Highland distillery. It was released in 2016 as a travel retail exclusive and following a packaging revamp in 2014.

A Brief History of Aberfeldy

Aberfeldy Distillery, nestled in the heart of Scotland’s Perthshire, was established in 1897 by the Dewar family. John Dewar & Sons, already renowned for their blending prowess, sought to create a distinctive single malt whisky.

The distillery, strategically located by the Pitilie Burn, benefits from a rich water source renowned for its purity and gold deposits.

For much of its history, Aberfeldy contributed to the Dewar’s blend.

Acquired by Bacardi in 1998, Aberfeldy became a single malt brand in its own right the following year. In the decades that followed, the distillery has begun to bottle older and more impressive single malts, including the retail exclusive Aberfeldy 28 Year Old (one of the oldest Aberfeldy whiskies ever bottled).

Aberfeldy Distillery is also the site of Dewar’s World of Whisky, and is home to the Dewar’s brand. Visitors can delve deep into the distillery’s past and learn more about the art of whisky blending.

Today, the distillery’s core range features a 12 year old, a 16 year old, and a 21 year old.
