New Kavalan Whisky Bar Lets You Drink Directly From A Cask

| July 23, 2019

There’s cask strength, and than there’s cask strength. It is the latter, drinking directly from the cask, that is something of a holy grail moment for those lucky enough to do so. Normally such experiences happen on distillery tours of aging warehouses, but Taiwanese distillery Kavalan is taking it a bit in a new direction with a new bar that lets you get it directly from a cask via a bar server pouring it for you.

The new Kavalan Whisky Bar, according to those behind it, is located in Taipei, which is Taiwan’s capital. It was designed to recreate the inside of the distillery’s maturation warehouses and it is here, from stacked casks, that one can drink whisky “on tap” from the barrel. The casks are lined with stainless steel to keep the whiskies in their optimal conditions in the bar.

“On the production side,” said Kavalan master blender Ian Chang in a prepared statement, “cask strength means taking a sip straight from the barrel. Drinkers can do exactly that in this bar to experience the purity and quality of our whisky.  They can choose which selected cask-strength whisky they want, walk up to the cask with their glasses, and start pouring.”

Beyond this cask drinking exercise, it is said this bar, dependent upon stocks, will also be a single place across the world where fans can access the fullest possible range of Kavalan’s expressions launched since 2008. On top of that, the bar is “designed to create an ‘experiential’ experience of Kavalan’s story,” with “special effects [that] include air gusts simulating the Pacific breezes which aid oxidation and are ‘breathed in’ by the whisky as well as for Kavalan’s water source, a remarkable backlit silhouette of the Snow Mountain range.”

Additionally, for those who prefer their whisky mixed, well known local bartenders are said to have crafted a signature Kavalan cocktail menu made up of 10 Kavalan whisky and gin cocktails.  They include classics like the Martini and Negroni.

Kavalan, for those unfamiliar with it, has been creating single malt whisky in Taiwan since
2005. Their whisky is said to be “aged in intense humidity and heat, sources the meltwaters of Snow Mountain and is enhanced by cool sea and mountain breezes. All this combines to create Kavalan’s signature creaminess.” To date they have collected more than 330 gold awards or higher from the industry’s most competitive contests, and are available in more than 70 countries.
