Tasting Notes:

About:
Distilled in 1972 from Loch Lomond’s unique straight neck pot stills, this is a limited release of only 100 bottles. Matured in first fill American oak until 2017, and then finished in refill Oloroso sherry casks for the final 6 years of its life. A very special presentation with this, too. A very solid wooden box with a mirror image of Loch Lomond displayed on the front.
Appearance:
Oloroso Sherry
Nose:
Guava and white chocolate! What an introduction. Pineapple syrup, lillet blanc, dates, fizzy peach ring sweets, chilli jam, and balsamic vinegar.

This liquid runs between sweet, sour, salty, tart, and back again.
Palate:
Very light arrival.

More creamy white chocolate, peaches, apricot, red grapes, no classic Loch Lomond ginger notes. Almost no wood on the palate at all, which is impressive for first fill bourbon maturation for 44 years.
Finish:
Red wine, sherry vinegar, super easy drinking. More guava, passion fruit, very clean, refreshing and welcoming. The lack of wood notes are impressive given the cask influences. The way thus was put together is quite a piece of art. Although, I think some would like a little more oak influences.
Comments:
Very tasty and beyond alluring. Depending on your bank balance.

How Does Loch Lomond 50 Year Old Compare To Younger Bottles From The Distillery?

A difficult question on the surface of things, but it’s a very warranted question when it comes to Loch Lomond, as they have the ability to produce super consistent batches of whisky, as well as super experimental bottlings, too.

The closest thing to compare to the 50 year old release would be anything from the Inchmurrin distillation offerings that Loch Lomond produces. Inchmurrin is a very tropical, white chocolate, summertime style of whisky that can offer whisky drinkers like yourself a wonderful experience when the heat can get a little too much. The missing element of ‘classic’ Loch Lomond flavor of ginger and Angostura bitters could be down to some different distillations with the original liquid, or it could simply be down to the incredible aging of the liquid. Either way, if you can get your hands on a sample of Inchmurrin 12 then you could get a brief glimpse into what this liquid is like!

What Makes Loch Lomond 50 Year Old A Must-Have?

It’s already sold out at the distillery, so that says huge amounts in advance. it’s only available through specialist retailers for its rather intense price tag, but clearly, there is demand for such old liquids from a relatively lesser-known distillery like Loch Lomond, especially in the huge array of premium distilleries looking to out-do each other with the oldest bottle, the most expensive bottle, etc.

Distilleries like Glen Grant, Glenfiddich, and even The Macallan showcase incredibly old whiskies for someone who has enough money to buy them – but sometimes they can all be much of a muchness when it comes to style. If you like it then that’s all that matters, but if you’ve got the spare cash to buy something like Loch Lomond 50 Year Old, then it should absolutely be on your radar if you’re after something super limited, beautifully presented, and from a distillery that is often overlooked for so many reasons, you should honestly check this out.

Availability And Exclusivity

As it is currently sold out through Loch Lomond’s own website, you’ll have to check out your local or international specialist retailer for availability and pricing. As it is limited to only 100 bottles, the thin spread of this liquid across the globe will be something relatively hard to see in the flesh. Loch Lomond has released a 50 year old liquid before, and it again sold it in pretty record time. Clearly, the folks who know how good it is aren’t waiting around to put it into their collections.
