Whisky Review: Springbank 22 Year Old Private Cask

Tasting Notes:

About:
A rare non-official private cask bottling from Campbeltown’s iconic Springbank distillery. Distilled in 1999 and matured for 22-Years in a first fill sherry hogshead, which produced only 210 bottles.
Appearance:
Dark Amber
Nose:
Lots of sherry cask influence, plenty of sherried fruits raisins and currants. There’s also toffee and honey sweetness, before a nutty note of roasted almonds.
Palate:
On the palate, an initial hit of rich sherried fruit cake before a sweet toffee note reminding me of sticky toffee pudding, giving way to a woody oaky note. Hold on the tongue to get a little of the characteristic Campbeltown salty brine profile.
Finish:
Medium length. Slightly drying with sherry and oaky wood, before a final coastal hit.
Comments:
A well-aged Springbank is a rare treat for me, and this is a well-sherried example. There’s a lot of cask influence, plenty of sweetness and sherried notes, but this may overwhelm the distillery character. A very easy drinking dram.

This Springbank 22 Year Old was distilled in 1999 and matured for 22 years in first-fill sherry hogshead #399. Bottled in November 2021, this became another of the rare private cask bottlings  scattered across the secondary market.

Most such bottlings are the result of the so-called ‘Springbank Syndicates’. These syndicates, comprising a group of whisky fans, friends, or investors, purchased Springbank casks upon the introduction of a public cask-buying scheme by the distillery in the 1990s. Drinkers decades later are now reaping the rewards, as many of these vintage, age-statement, and single-cask releases offer old and rare Springbank whisky at a price point much lower than similar bottles for public release.

Only 210 bottles were produced from this cask, making this an incredibly rare expression.

Other such bottles include the Springbank Starkickers, which you can read about here.

Springbank Distillery is one of just three working distilleries in Campbeltown. Once the ‘Whisky Capital of the World’ with over 30 working distilleries, Campbeltown saw the closure of many such plants during the 1980s Whisky Loch.

But never fear, Campbeltown fans. The region is set to make a comeback, with multiple distilleries planned for the town within the coming years.
