What’s known today as Dewar’s blended Scotch whisky brand has a long history. It was started in 1846 by John Dewar from his small wine and spirits merchant shop in Scotland. Today, owned by spirits giant Bacardi, it is considered one of the largest Scotch whisky brands in the world. Its myriad of bottlings are crafted using Dewar’s oak marrying aging process, which involves returning the whisky blend to vintage oak casks for further maturation.

Among the various lines in Dewar’s portfolio, the Double Double offerings stand out due to their four-stage crafting process, spearheaded by Master Blender Stephanie Macleod. In it, the initial whiskies in the blend are aged, blended together, aged again, and then finished in special casks to give what the brand feels is the ultimate in smooth-tasting expression.
What’s in the bottle
What’s being reviewed here from the Dewar’s Double Double lineup is Dewar’s Double Double 21-Year-Old Mizunara Cask Finish. This expression, a blend of Scotch single grain and single malt whiskies, goes through the previously mentioned four-step process, with the finishing occurring in Japanese Mizunara oak casks.
