Tomatin Distillery Rolls Out Whisky Line Inspired by the Elements

Scotland’s Tomatin distillery has unveiled a new, limited edition lineup of Scotch single malt whiskies which draw inspiration from nature’s elements and their interplay with the whisky creation process. Known as the Five Virtues, two of the five expressions in this line up are being made available now, with others to follow in the coming months.

The first of the new bottlings, Wood, is a 46% ABV whisky with no age statement which was drawn from a blend of French, American, and Hungarian oak casks. Six thousand bottles are available, and it is said that the flavor is “reminiscent of a perfectly balanced Old Fashioned cocktail, with flavours of brown sugar, orange peel, soft vanilla and oaky spice. It is complex and round with a long, rich finish.”

Following Wood is Fire, the second of the five new whiskies. It is also a 6,000 bottle release, aged in heavily charred oak casks which were previously used before being stripped and then re-fired again for this Scotch. It’s 46% ABV once again, with flavor notes that suggest drinking it is “like devouring a sweetly satisfying baked apple pie with a light dusting of cinnamon. Creamy with some citrus zing, this edition is slightly dry with a delicate, spicy finish.”

Following Wood and Fire will be Earth (peat-dried malted barley casks), Metal (copper stills), and Water (pure soft water from the Alt-na-Frith burn). All whiskies are priced at around £50, or about $65 USD, and come in special cartons decorated with contemporary Scottish art designed by abstract artist Eva Ullrich.

“As our brand grows we are increasingly inspired by global concepts and the Five Virtues series was born out of this inspiration,” said Jennifer Masson, Tomatin marketing manager, in a prepared statement. “We wanted to release a creative limited edition series focussing on the effects of different cask maturations, while linking it to a wider concept. That is something that we have achieved with Five Virtues and we are incredibly proud to be launching the series onto the market this month.”
