The Glenrothes Introduces A 42-Year-Old Scotch Whisky

Part science, part art, The Glenrothes recently introduced one of its oldest whiskies to date, “The 42.”

A statement from the distiller notes that this limited release of 1,134 bottles is actually the second oldest whisky to be released by The Glenrothes, and one of the first to be created by Master Whisky Maker  Laura Rampling.

The whisky itself is a union of four hand-selected casks that have matured for 42 years among the colors and evolving landscape of The Glenrothes Estate in Scotland’s Speyside region.

The whisky maker noted that art and color in nature was the inspiration behind this expression. It was created in the tradition of art, forged from the landscape of its Highland estate.

It began as clear spring water bubbling up and filtered through millions of years of rock. Through distillation, it became a new-make spirit that was crisp, light, and fruity. It was the canvas.

The liquid spent 42 springs, summers, autumns and winters resting in four casks at the estate. It evolved as the landscape around it changed through the many seasons.

In fact, it took more than 504 months to perfect its fragrance and flavor.

The distiller’s notes show that on the nose, The 42 has aromas of sun-ripened apricots, orange peel and sugared almonds with hints of coriander seed, nutmeg and fresh cedar wood. It’s taste is of honeycomb and brown sugar blended with vanilla and toasted almonds. On the lingering finish is a light oak and orange oil note.

Rampling, The Glenrothes master whisky maker, said of The 42, “It’s part science, part alchemy, and a little bit of magic, the result is a beautifully elegant whisky that truly allows the bright and vibrant character of The Glenrothes to sing.”

A new crystal decanter, an interpretation of the original Glenrothes bottle, holds the whisky with cuts inspired by the oak staves of their casks and crowned by a crystal stopper. The 42 clocks in at 43% ABV.
