Douglas Laing & Co. recently announced a new limited edition expression, The Gauldrons Sherry Cask Finish.
Joining their core expression, which launched back in 2017, The Gauldrons Sherry Edition is limited to 2,125 bottles. It’s a blend of single cask single malts from Campbeltown, and was finished in Spanish Sherry casks.
As is the hallmark of the Douglas Laing family business, this small batch bottling clocks in at 46.2% ABV without coloring or chill-filtration.
The Gauldrons, inspired by the dark sandy coves on Campbeltown’s west shores, means “bay of storms.” It was here, it is said, that King Robert the Bruce, having been defeated by his enemies, was inspired watching a spider building his web with great patience but great difficulty.
The spider is emblematic of The Gauldrons expression, and features on the bottle’s packaging, which sports a sleek black bottle with red streaks that bring to life the Sherry cask maturation. It comes with a gold foil detail and a mini booklet, placed around the bottle neck.
Cara Laing, marketing director, said in a prepared statement, “We’re thrilled to launch the first-ever limited edition for The Gauldrons … Experimenting with these exceptional-quality Sherry casks has resulted in a classically Campbeltown dram with smoky sweetness balanced by rich spices, and we truly can’t wait to share it with whisky aficionados across the globe.”
The Gauldrons Sherry Cask Finish is available from specialist spirits retailers and online and has a suggested retail price of £60.00.
The Gauldrons Sherry Cask Finish distiller’s notes:
- Nose: A sweet aroma of toffee apples, marshmallows, caramelized sugar and candyfloss.
- Taste: The palate delivers crème brûlée, evolving to ginger, nutmeg and red apple with lingering smoked barley.
- Finish: A sharp finish with tangy orange sweets, stewed red fruits and black pepper covered strawberries.
Established in 2017, by Douglas Laing & Co, The Gauldrons represents the “ultimate distillation of Campbeltown,” and presents a whisky style of salty and maritime with a spicy finish. For more information, check out www.douglaslaing.com.
