The Devil’s Punch Bowl Chapter III: The Fiendish Finale One Very Sinister Scottish Malt Whisky

devil-3One of the more anticipated limited edition Scotch releases in a reasonable price range (i.e. under $200 on average at retail) over the last few years comes from the Isle of Arran distillery. Known as the Devil’s Punch Bowl series, this trilogy launched in 2012 is now complete as of this fall thanks to the debut of The Devil’s Punch Bowl Chapter III: The Fiendish Finale.

Limited to just 6,660 bottles worldwide and now just appearing on American shelves, The Devil’s Punch Bowl Chapter III: The Fiendish Finale is a non-age statement expression that draws aged single malts from different barrel types, including Oloroso sherry butts, French oak barriques and bourbon barrels.

As to why it is called Devil’s Punch Bowl, Isle of Arran said it is

inspired by the glacial hollow ‘Coire na Ciche’ whose sinister presence dominates the north-east coast of Arran. Our fiendish Distiller James MacTaggart has perused the darkest corners of our warehouses one last time to hand pick the finest casks for the third and final release of this infernal trilogy of devilish drams.

The bottling, which is at natural strength and non-chill filtered, has the following tasting notes per the distillery.

Nose: Aromatic and floral, a delicate perfume of white peaches with a background of white chocolate

Palate: The influence of the barriques are evident almost immediately, the delicate floral notes give way to a rich and warming touch of spice which amplifies beautifully on your tongue. Chocolate raisin and cinnamon in the tail give this a creamy mouth feel. The fresh character of Arran prevails, the typical citrus notes always in the background, complimented with the light vanilla from the Bourbon Barrels which add a layer of sweetness.

Finish: Long, lingering and luxurious. The final curtain falls with long lasting notes of sweet spice and mandarin. A memorable performance, there’s no going back once you’ve been tempted by the Devil.
