The Beast Of Dufftown Kicks Out A 98 Proof Scotch Whisky

Mortlach: The Beast is Back, with Exclusive Edition for TravellersThe Mortlach distillery, part of spirits giant Diageo’s range of Scotch whisky offerings, saw a rebirth of sorts last year with the launch of four distinct new bottlings. Two of these are non-age statement specific releases, including a travel retail exclusive Special Strength expression which just now is coming to market.

Mortlach Special Strength, bottled at a hefty 98 proof, is drawn from what’s described by Mortlach as “a complex combination of first fill, refill and re-charred American and European oak casks.” It was put at 49% ABV, as opposed to the 43.3% of the distillery’s Rare Old Scotch, in order to help drinkers better get at “the complex yet harmonious character” of its taste profile.

Diageo, in debuting this whisky from an operation known nicknamed “The Beast of Dufftown,” is making available at select airports’ travel retail outlets a special crystal glass whisky tumbler set with each purchase. Mortlach Special Strength, when it arrives shortly at duty free shops, will price at £75 / $120. Some official tasting notes for it are below.

A big, friendly and warming special strength Mortlach, best enjoyed straight, which is at once complex and delicious.  Very grown up, with a complicated yet harmonious mix of vanilla and mature oak underscored by roasted aromatics and a long and deeply affecting finish.
