Talisker Skye Whisky Reflects “Rugged Wild Beauty” Of Its Island Origins

talisker-skyeThe Talisker distillery, set on the Scottish island of Skye, debuted a few years back its Storm non-age statement whisky. Now, in keeping with a theme which reflects “the rugged, wild beauty” of its remote location, Talisker has recently unveiled another non age statement new bottling called Skye.

Talisker Skye, according to the distillery, was “made from a combination of hand selected toasted and refill American oak casks, carefully chosen by Talisker’s master blenders to accentuate the sweet, citrus notes of Talisker, whilst retaining the distillery’s unmistakable character.”

Bottled at 45.8% ABV, Skye is pricing around £33 ($50 USD). Official tasting notes for it are below.

Nose: Starts gently with the glorious citrus sweetness of fresh oranges. Behind this, there’s a maritime air with fresh seaweed, dry driftwood and sea salt, backed by classic Talisker notes of comforting smoke. More spice yields a peppery and slightly earthy nose-feel. There’s also a sweet-sharp trace of toffee apple with some red berry fruit. Water tames the spice and smoke, but the aroma remains maritime.

Palate: Soft and sweet at first, coating and tongue tingling, with very light smoke. That sweetness quickly becomes more savoury (salted caramels, honey glazed ribs on a barbecue) with subtle smoke and a hot spiciness. After this, it’s gently chewy with some herbal notes. At reduced strength the taste remains salty, though less so, after a lightly sweet start.

Finish: Long and warming, yet also fresh, with a big, peppery finale and a late trace of sweet smoke.
