Springbank 12 Year Old Burgundy Wood Likely An Awesome Dram

Springbank 12 Year Old Burgundy WoodThere is something you have to give the folks at cult Scotch whisky distillery favorite Springbank credit for: when they release a new limited edition expression they (1) do it with relatively little fanfare and (2) likely know it will get snapped up fast. Such looks to be the case with a new release which spent a dozen years snoozing in fresh Burgundy wine casks.

The new Springbank 12 Year Old Burgundy Wood, like we said in the title, sounds like an awesome whisky. It is a 53.3% ABV bottling which was aged for its entire length in Burgundy wine wood casks. It is another one of their limited edition releases, numbering a little over 10,000 bottles in scope. I know this may sound like a lot, but as this is a global push out, stock will go fast in places where Springbank is extremely popular.

Though no specific price was mentioned for this offering, overseas it seems to be averaging out around $100 at the moment. Official tasting notes from Springbank for this are below for your consideration – take note of the pancetta reference…when was the last time you heard that tied to a whiskey??

  • Nose: Bold and rich with mineral and dunnage warehouse notes combining with maple syrup, pancetta, cranberry and red currants.
  • Palate: A soft velvet like texture with buttered brown toast and chocolate shortbread complimenting light herb & oak notes.
  • Finish: A medium dry finish gives up liquorice and mint accompanied woody tannins
