Spiritual Home of Scotch Whisky Debuts Its First Single Malt After Centuries Long Absence

The Lindores Abbey Distillery is unveiling its signature malt for the first time in more than 500 years after previous distillation there was first recorded on site.

The Lindores Single Malt MCDXCIV (1494) will hit shelves on July 2 and be available from a variety of retailers in the UK and online. A limited run of these bottles will have commemorative packaging containing the same spirit.

The Lindores Single Malt is the first Scotch whisky from Lindores Abbey Distillery and will be made available for purchase 527 years after distillation at that location was  first ever recorded in 1494.

The distillery made 1,494 bottles of the inaugural Lindores Abbey release for its members last spring. The distiller offers just 1494 memberships to its 1494 Society, a group that gets first offers on limited edition bottlings, free entrance to the distillery and more. Membership costs £500.

The two new releases, the Lindores Single Malt MCDXCIV (1494) Commemorative release and the Lindores Single Malt MCDXCIV, are the first to be made available for purchase by the public. They both contain the same Lowland single malt spirit with the Commemorative release being presented with a special label.

“It is wonderful to announce a date for our first general release, as we know our fans across the world have been keen to enjoy a sip of whisky history,” Drew McKenzie Smith, founder and MD of Lindores Abbey Distillery, said in a prepared statement. “The response to our inaugural members’ release was hugely positive and we are delighted to be able to now share the Commemoratively labelled Lindores and Lindores MCDXCIV. The thinking behind this is that we want all our whisky to be accessible and enjoyed rather than only collected. If people want to enjoy our product they can do so even if they are not fortunate enough to obtain a commemoratively labelled bottle.”
