Scotch By Nino Marchetti / March 11, 2014 Besides the Singleton distillery I wrote about earlier today, another Scotch maker that calls the Speyside region of Scotland home is Tormore, which is named after the Gaelic ‘Torra Mhòir’, meaning ‘big hill’. This operation, owned by Chivas Brothers/Pernod Ricard, is much younger of an outfit, being founded in 1958 as one of the first new Scottish distilleries to be built after World War II.Sourcing its water from the Achvochkie Burn, which flows “through wild heather and peat, and over expansive granite hills” before getting to the distillery, Tormore has once again tapped this special water to help create its new 14 and 16 year old single malts.Tormore’s new 14 Year Old and 16 Year Old whiskies are both produced at this point in “limited quantities from a small number of carefully-selected casks.” They are aged in American oak casks and non-chill filter bottled at 48 and 43 percent ABV, respectively. Price wise expect to pay around $60 for the 14 year old and $80 for the 16 as they roll out globally in the coming months.Tasting notes for both new Tormore whiskies from the distillery are mentioned below. As part of the launch of these spirits, the distillery also refreshed its packaging to “showcase [its] still room and natural landscape.” Both bottlings come in nice cartons that feature the batch number and the signature of the master distiller.Tormore 14 Year OldNose: Sweet, smooth, berries, fruity, with a slight citrus and spice note. A touch of vanilla creaminess.Taste: Sweet, soft, smooth, with a hint of creamy toffee.Finish: Long, sweet with a slight peppery note.Tormore 16 Year OldNose: Very sweet, rich fruit, barley sugar, slight vanilla notes.Taste: Sweet, very smooth, fruity, mouth-watering.Finish: Long, sweet slightly dry.
